I am getting to the stage where replacing my powersteering rack is going to be the only option soon.

I have a fair bit of mechanical know how and do most things on my car. However, I dont have a hoist.

Is there a how to, or could someone run through some pointers and tips for me?

If i do this myself, ill be doing it on stands in the carport. I dont have a problem paying for it to be done, just thought if it wasnt too full on id attempt it myself.

Car is a 1998 TF magna.

Cheers

G'day Rush.

The most painless way is to take it to a steering shop and let them do it.

However if you think you are up for it, I would suggest taking the rack out and buying an exchange unit as they can be a bit trick sometimes to assemble yourself without nicking an oil seal and that means leaks.
The bigger steering shops in Syd have an exchange thing happening the same as alts and starter motors.
Bound to be the same in SA.

Basically, you need to break the tie rod end and steering arm tapers.
You'll need a tool for that or if you have good aim, a hammer will do.

Undo the power steer pipes. Remember that it is very easy to cross thread them when reassembling.
And you will need something to catch the oil.
Undo the bolt in the steering shaft universal, undo the rack mounting bolts and out it comes.
When you reassemble you need to have the rack centered and the steering wheel as well before you feed the pinion shaft into the uni and offer the rack to the mounting plates at the same time.

So my best advice is to hold your tongue the right way and make sure there are no women or kids in earshot. :)

Do a google for the service manual. I found a freeby for mine but can't recall the site.
It comes in PDF form and though it has an index you've got to scroll around for a few mins to find the right section.
It will explain it all piecemeal.
And there's help here.
Good luck.

Ummmm. Not quite mate

With a magna quite a few more bits to remove prior to rack coming out

Yeh i had a look yesterday and it looks like the rear section of the exhaust needs to come off along with the K frame? Maybe i should price up getting it done. Sounds a little more full on for the driveway

I know it is simplified version of what is involved.

The guy asked for tips and pitfalls.

Its very doable in a driveway. Just raise the car up high and put it on stands. Taking the K frame off is a done thing, but I only removed the exhaust pipe. Mal actually gave all the necessary tips in another post (have a search). Also, a TL/TW rack is what people put in when they are changing their rack. It has more feel to it. Took me a good few hours, but start early and you shouldnt have a problem. As for getting the tie rod end out - put something stiff and non absorbent (like another hammer) on the back of where youll be hammering to increase the shock. Sometimes you need everything you can get.
Good luck!

Bit of an update. Got quoted $350 for a low km tl-tw rack fitted drive in drive out with a 3 month warranty.

Going to get this done when I have holidays in the coming month

does it include the pump as well ? or is it just the rack the gives the better feel ?
