My poor old TH now has a knocking sound after I pushed it a little hard the other day. It's not a rattle it's a knock, the oil is full and clean but it could probably do with a change and now I'm wondering if I've broken something serious.

checked engine mounts?

Engine knock:
Determine if it is throttle related - does it get louder if you use more throttle or lift off?

Knock that has a deep note to it, gets worse with more throttle = big end(s).
Knock that has a high note to it, gets worse when you lift off throttle = little end(s).

As above, check engine mounts, check exhaust system is still correctly attached to the bodywork and has correct clearance.

PS> If the oil is full and clean why do you think it needs changing?

doing an oil change may not be a bad idea in this case, a lot can be told just from the bottom of an oil pan, just make sure the pan you use to drop the oil in is squeaky clean.

When you say "pushed it a little hard" how hard do you mean? Excessive "limiter bashing" or the like? Many K's on the car?
These motors can take a fair amount of punishment if reasonably well maintained. My old TF saw 6600rpm many times back in the days with no issues to date but it was immaculately maintained.
Hopefully it's something simple anyway.

Foot flat to the floor 1st to 2nd(auto) I wasn't looking at the RPM's then backed off at the speed limit. I just remembered it backfired, I'm pretty sure it was the Magna and not the VT.

Many kms .... um is 400,000kms on lpg many?
The belt is due to be done and to be honest I'm talking to a car yard tomorrow about a KL.
It's had like a valve thrash sound at high revs for the last 50,000kms or so and that is still there at higher revs but I'm not trying my luck until I get a mechanic to look at it.

Just means I have to drive the other halfs Clubsport until we figure mine out. . . . damn shame that is although it is like driving a truck it's nice having a V8 under my right foot.

Drive it like you stole it . . . . instead, you just broke it. lol

Probably spun a bearing.

Generally if you hold it flat in an auto it changes to second around 5600 rpm unless you hold it in L.

The old girl might just be worn out. Would need a mechanic to see it in person to have a better idea.
If it's spun a bearing see if you can get some trade-in moolah for it, or if the car is in good cosmetic shape you might be better off taking it off the road and selling the good parts off it, would probably make the same either way.

I've made a decision ...... anyone wanna buy an Altera on LPG going cheap?

Going to Adelaide tomorrow to pick up a 2003 Verada Wagon ......

mmmm . . . TH, 400,000 km, blown engine (possibly). Yes, cheap . . . . how much? (start a "for sale" thread.)

Check the service records on the KL. Ask for a discount if the belt hasn't been changed.

Yep belt was done not long ago and already got a decent discount, he's putting 3 months reg on it for me so I'll have 3 months to get a RW and transfer it over to Vic Reg.
