View Full Version : 2003 TJ - Changed front rocker gasket - Now wont start

Hi all.

I changed the rear rocker gasket a month or so back with no issues as it was leaking the most. Front was only weeping.

Today did the front. All went easy till it came time to start.

It kicks over fine. Can smell fuel so guess the injectors are working. Can only guess it spark. But where and what did I bump?

Or any other suggestions...

Thanks.

Did you put the plug leads back the correct way?

Yep..

Check that you have plugged back in the connectors to (if you unplugged them):

MAF Sensor just behind the air filter box
TPS Sensor on throttle body
ISC on the underside of the throttle body
Distributor

Only had the 3 plugs out and the two oil breathers.

Had all that fun when I did the rear month or so ago.

Check the vacuum line to the FPR, I *think* it is in that area, but that shouldn't cause starting issues.
A total lack of wanting to fire is suggesting you have killed the spark.

Perhaps you dropped something down onto the dizzy or coil?
Did you get stuck into the area with the degreaser/hose?

Didn't go anywhere near the dizzy apart from pushing the plugs when it wouldn't start. Looked for a coil but couldn't see one. I'm guessing its in the dizzy.

No degreaser/hose - learned the hard way on that when the auto got water in the plug.

I'm sure it is the spark side of things but where is doing my head in.

Will check the vac line tomoz.

Could just be a coincidence, if you have triple checked everything that you touched doing the front gasket, that something else has gone wrong.
Try unplugging the CAS sensor, then reconnecting.
If no joy, read the ecu error codes. Maybe CAS, immobilizer etc has decided to act up.

FPR ok.

CAS - that crank or cam? Unpluged the dizzy and pluged back in. Looked clean.

Also tried the spare keys this morning.

CAS = crank angle sensor, wires run up the side of the plastic timing case on the driver's side. Connector is near the fuel rail.

Cam angle sensor and coil are inside the distributor.

You really are looking in the dark without reading the ECU error codes.

The connector near the fuel rail is ok.

Currently reading up on how to get the ECU error codes.

Constant flashing, that's no error from what I read? - have video if need be.

correct. Weird. Which light was flashing?

Have you checked the ignition output? (Pull front plug lead, put old plug in, crank. look for spark.)

Engine light flashing when connected.

I do that on the sigma. And with its quad coils makes it easy to track. Was hesitant on doing it on the Magna but as suspected no spark.

The general wisdom on this forum is that no spark, yet no error codes, means there is a problem with the distributor. I would be tempted to check it - distributor cap centre button, ignition coil resistance measurement - or replace it with a second hand one.

Unless someone can chime in and suggest something else that could be the problem?

Second hand one installed today. All working fine again. Will fix the old one so as to have a spare on hand.

Thanks all for the help, especially MadMax.
