Hi there,

I bought a great 1993 V6 TR Sedan for $1000. All in superb condition with only a small dent at the back. Interior all original and in immaculate condition. Great buy and love the car which has replaced my 1994 which came to the end of the road.
Anyhow, my only concern is after getting it checked over the piston rings are worn and it blows white smoke at take off from the lights now and then indicating valve stem seals may need attention.

The engine has just clocked 300,000Ks but other than these issues all in great condition.

Ive had varying quotes in Perth to get piston rings and valve stem seals done ranging from $800 to $5K.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic for TR Magnas in Perth? As I love the car and want to get on top of any issues before they become bigger problems.

Also - with a TR V6 at 300,000 K's would any other issues likely to start coming up - head gasket etc

White smoke is steam, blue smoke is oil burning. Two totally different problems, two totally different causes, two totally different approaches to repairing.

Labour is the big cost i did my brothers for $500 parts only and it had alot less miles on it than yours. Not looked after very well in its early life.
Sometimes it is easier to locate a good low KM engine from a reputable company and just swap them if your keen to revamp it.
They are around just takes patience to locate.
ALso monitor the oil consumption for a while as you may have just seen some normal steam from a cold engine and exhaust system.
Does it use water?? Vee

Hi Vee, Cheers for the feedback.
All fine on the water front. Mitsubishi mechanic told of the worn piston rings after last major service a few weeks back.
Only blows a bit of smoke now and then. Just weighing up whether a 300k+ motor is worth spending anything on to get it sorted or run the motor out and deal with it at the end of the road.
For now just trying to get a recommendation for a good mechanic in Perth to look over the motor, and what to realistically expect in terms of cost for each possibility of 1. piston rings and 2. valve stem seal works. So far I have been quoted on piston ring replacement works only for $800 and $3500 by 2 different garages

You would be able to buy a good low mileage motor and have installed for way less than $3500.Probably less than half that.
Magna motors are very common and you can get them cheap. $800 for a ring replacement is very good provided when they pull it down they make sure it is not too far gone and needs a rebore. The heads have to come off the motor so the valve stem seals would be done the same time as the re-ring. I think it is also possible to do the valve stem seals on these without removing the heads if you have the equipment i know the 2.6 Astron 4 cylinder you can.
You can do a re-ring with the engine inplace on these which is good.Is the engine using much oil??Vee
