View Full Version : 6G7X Weaknesses

Hi everyone,
What are some weaknesses in these motors, and are any of them more susceptible to problems than others?
From what I see on the forums, rocker cover gaskets seem to leak fairly frequently. I don't know how this compares to other engines though.
Also in general from what I understand oil leaks seems to be common.
Tappet noise, though this may not be an issue?
Leaky valve stem seals?
Is the 6G75 any more resilient towards any of the common issues?
EDIT:
Also whether there were any changes making any specific year engine have more flaws than the rest?
I walked passed a TL/W idling the other day and it sounded dead silent and smooth. Never heard a Magna so silent before. Did these cars get any updates inside the motors?

TW 8 years old 140 000K, rocker & plug seals at 4.5 years 90000k, distributor o-ring late last year probably been weeping 12 months before, front engine seals done at timing belt change were not weeping and still looked ok on removal, yet to hear a lash adjuster tick, regular oil & filter changes, main engine mount splitting next on my list don't know when it went. Nil smoke on startup, nil oil consumption.
Standard wear and tear. I think it's a solid motor.

6G75 was the last of the Magna motors are such
Mitsubishi fixed flaws that occurred in earlier motors
But it's still like any motor from any make, provided service is kept up and you don't cheap-out on repairs its bound to last 250,000kms++
My 2004 TW has a slight leak under the rocker cover gasket (according to mechanic) but he said it won't be a problem for at least another 10,000kms (mine currently has 79XXXkms original)
Its quite a resilient engine, but flog it enough and redline it when its stone cold and you bound to do some serious wear

Just a few minor problems as the car ages. Nothing to worry about.

Which Magna had the 6g75 mate?

I think he meant the 380 as a spiritual successor to the Magna
My Pajero (2000 NL model, 6G74 engine) had 254000 km on the clock when I dropped a spring washer into the No 6 intake and it slightly buggered it. Eventually after a lot of hassles and poor mechanics, I bought a new set of pistons, rings, bearings & gudgeons to rebuild the engine. When the engine was stripped down, we could still see the original honing marks on the cylinder bores. End gap on the old piston rings was at the top limit for new rings, so we just replaced No 4 & No 6 pistons, rings, bearings etc and put it back together. We had to lap in 2 exhaust valves, but that was all we did. I was amazed at the lack of wear in the engine. OK - it ran on gas, and had mostly long runs, but after that time & distance it was in fantastic condition.

My 2000 Verada is at 500,000 kms and is starting to show its age.
Been running LPG, and mostly long runs up and down the freeway - but also towing moderate loads with the trailer as well, serviced every 10,000.
She has a broken heater, air con lost gas years ago, and she is starting to colour the oil at 7000kms. She leaks from both rocker covers and burns oil as well - about 1-2L in 10,000kms. Oh, and the ICS has shit itself.
I think the old girl is doing quite well considering everything...

My KH is at 215000 k's and running perfectly fine. Regular maintenance. Original rocker cover gaskets and seals. No leaks, although some minor black buildup of crud can be seen around the gaskets. Doesnt burn oil. Runs quiet, some minor tappet noise which has been there as long as i can remember. With regular omgoing maintenance and minor repairs i expect this engine would easily last another 200,000. I imagine the auto box will fail before the engine, although thats running fine as well.

Without knowing the exact history (but i do know the original owner, he is a work mate) all i can say is that my auto trans is still going strong.
It is showing me that it needs a filter change and a flush, but thats about it :)

yep 380 is what I meant sorry
I still class the 380 as a magna, even though I know it doesn't wear the magna name plate

The main weak points engine wise are oil leaks: rocker covers gaskets, spark plug tube seals, distributor and thrust cap o-rings.
Rough idle could be considered an issue, but thats part and parcel of a 6G74 engine.
Mine has 237,000km, and have had the above replaced in the past 60,000km - along with the cam and front crank seals (as part of the timing belt change at 189k, but weren't noted as leaking - preventative measure)
I wouldn't consider noisy tappets or leaking valve stem seals common on a well maintained Magna.
