hi all ,iv done something to my tj vrx , something rather bad by the sounds its making , i recently shatered a cv joint doing something rather stupid ,at the same time i tore out the front engine mount or roll stop , so i replaced the shafts and engine mounts with new stuff.

now when im driving it vibrates under acceleration and locks up/clicks harshly when i turn right sometimes , im fairly sure the diff is stuffed im just wondering about the box

iv either gotta replace the diff or the whole box ,i was planning on getting a quafe lsd but theres not much point putting it in a screwed box

opinions? any help is greatly appreciated

the only way you'll find out is by pulling it out, i guess. the advantage you have here is that it's all together in the sense that the gearbox and diff are a single unit.

ok mate sounds like mine, although mine was getting stuck under acceleration, from dumping it (being stupid) and axle tramping the bitch !, if its similar and your diff is stuffed, the more you drive around the more damage youll do to the entire gearbox, if yours was still good (like mine) i got every gear flushed and reinstalled along with a new diff, if your planning on keeping the car and making it more powerful id reccommend upgrading the diff too if you have cash to spend. my 2c :)

Hey Matt ,iv been baseing my assumption on what happened to yours ,except mine being a non lsd I figure that's why it's only doing it when turning one way , there was most definitely Axel tramp , iv got the cash and am keeping the car and there's plans for abit more power

Ooooh something I didn't mention, I jacked it up and gave the drivers side wheel a turn and it slitely click going forward not turned , locks up at full lock right after a few turns but I can push it past the locked spot ,if I turn it backwards it completely locks and I can't push it any further ,this was while in gear from the non drive wheel ,in neutral it was free but I didn't try from the drive wheel as I didn't think to at the time

I would say is the Diff but there may be bits floating around that can also then damage the box itself

We can remove and inspect the box but the symptoms you describe say diff. How on earth did you pop a cv and break mounts :)

Hoon driving makes baby Jesus cry and breaks the Magna!

Probably did in the diff bits that only rotate when you corner. (spider gears). As stated by Mal, bits floating around may chip gears if small or jam things up if there are big bits in the oil. Not good idea to drive it like that.

I was on a skid pan so I did a skid , in reverse ,I know it wasn't ideal , my theory is when the mount went the strain of the motor dropping loaded up the drive shafts then broke stuff , the drivers side mount was already torn out (again) which I'm sure didn't help the situation, at this stage I'm thinking of just replacing the box as my other car is also off the road so I'm driving my sister's car which I don't enjoy in the slightest

This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the CV shaft is both the correct item and its installed correctly? Maybe just check that over first. I'm only suggesting because there are a few different RH side shafts for these cars right? As for fitment, I'm no expert, but when I'm finished a job and it doesn't sound right I go over and double check everything I've done.

I know a guy who had a Magna 3.8 + Manual, drove like a bat out of hell everywhere - I don't ever remember that car eating a diff'. It sure did eat CV shafts though (when it wasn't spitting them out).

Is not hooning if is on a skid pan, you were off the road, being responsible and broke your car which as you know is a risk you take when having fun, these things happen

We do have 1 spare gear box here from a 3.0l, other than that we have nothing available at the moment. If you do end up getting another box we may be willing to purchase your broken box from you as well BTW

Yeah mate ive double check everything , uninstalled and reinstalled ,had it checked my my mechanic and everything is in properly apparently

And mal yes I knew the risk when I started and laughed my ass off when a pile of ball bearings was placed in my hands , these things do happen ,not the first time won't be the last :)
