hey all i bought myself a th magna executive for parts..
what i'd like to know how difficult of a task have i set myself? as i've done it before in the falcon.. but they are a little different in some areas
te only has cruise control optioned and a\c
th has trip comp, speed alert, a\c, wiring for cruise
only thing that really isn't a issue. th isnt on lpg where the te is. (need to keep the te on lpg)
i have no issues finding what wires it splices into and moving them onto the th loom. (is not the first time i've done this either)
would i need to retain the th ecu to get the use of all the other fun features? or will the te one work?
is there anything i should be aware of doing a swapover like this?
as the auto will be going in the te along with the better suspension. as mine is worn out.
i'd imagine i'd need to fit the pollution control stuff from the th 3.5 to the te 3.0 (both v6) if i used the complete th looms?
as last thing i want is it to start logging codes.
i'm not using the 3.5 as its tired and blows oil smoke, also timing belt is overdue .
where the 3.0 feels strong and doesnt leak, and timing belt has done maybe 40,000 k's since replacement

I don't know exact model differences but personally I would use engine , ecu and associated wiring for trip computer bem, dash parts from donor car. Your gonna run into trouble with immobiliser but that can be fixed by getting the ecu re flashed. Or transferring bem ignition barrel and keys from donor car. Ecu reflash would be my route.
The magnas are not as simple as your fords.
I wouldn't worry about the gas until after you get the car running. Your gonna throw some codes no matter what you do. So KISS principle applys until you get it running then complicate it with the gas setup.
That's how I would approach it but I'm not very experience with the magnas.
Give me a Subaru and I can swap an engine in a day.
It's a big task but nothing you wouldn't be able to do. The mechanical work is gonna be the same as any other engine swap it just the electrics that's gonna be a pain in the ass....
Just wanna confirm 3L is in the th and your swapping that into the te?

yeah i was intending to use the entire loom, cbf'd playing mix match and trouble shooting later.
i wonder how hard it would be to swap the ignition barrel? as swapping the column's over isnt a problem for me as the one in the te has a bit of bearing play iirc.
the cars are at my parents.. so it may screw me getting the ecu flashed.. but if i use everything all the wiring even down to the key i shouldn't need to. correct?
yeah.. its a little more fiddly from looking at the magna compared to the reloom i did in the falcon.
lpg.. true that. get it running and then play splice other crap in.
i'm not well versed with the 3rd gens either. as my 1st gen i had when i was 17, i didnt do any mods. only service it. and replace stuff as it broke
good point, the mechanicals will be easy. driveline not so much. but the th will have its rad support cut off anyways for easy access.
motors
the 3 litre is in the te, where the th has the 3.5 litre
the th 3.5 litre won't be used as my 3 litre in the te is in better condition.
te motor doesnt leak\burn oil, and been well maintained. also timing belt water pump arent old.
where the 3.5 blows oil smoke, the timing belt on that motor is somewhat overdue. and the th motor needs more work than the te 3.0 does
basically the te will be put on the road on the cheap. and i know the te motor is fine. hell it never gave me trouble for the 55 thousand k's i did in it during the 12 months it was registered

Yeah the ignition barrel should be easy to change as long as you have the key. You will have to swap ignition barrel, lightring around barrel, bem (or receiver unit) and ecu and wiring. I would change ove door lock too to save using different keys.
I've worked on falcons before and they are simple to work on and fix. But these magnas are a bit more complicated
If you have a laptop and have an idea with computers I would invest in one of the open port cables $20( someone correct me if I'm wrong) so once you have done the swap, you can read error codes. There is bound to be one at least. Lol
I would spend $50 on a Haynes manual also
How's it going anyway you pulled the motor yet?

sweet.. that part should be easy then, as i have the key to both cars anyways.
i'll see about swapping door locks too as most of the time i used the keyless entry anyways.
yeah they seem to be a little more complicated and a bit more compact.
i have a laptop and one of those cables. but for the life of me can't get it to work.
its been suggested trying to run the program on windows xp instead of windows 7. as the conflict may be software having a tanty
oh i plan to. i have one i downloaded too aswell so i have at least that to go by.
no havent pulled the motor out as of yet. been busy getting my sisters daewoo espero through a rwc first.
putting the easiest one on the road first as she and my parents need a 2nd car rego'd.
what makes it harder is, i don't live at home so i'm only there a couple days a week atm.
its a 400k round trip for me atm, but wont be as bad in feb as i'm moving from eastern melbourne to outer western melbourne
once the daewoo is out of the way, i'll be making a start on the magna's as the sooner the better. i have till feb to get it done and registered, as it will be the work hack.

At least rego will be easy. No need for engineers cert cause it's factory. Great success!!!!
I don't know if your already did it already bit when pulling the 3L (it made it easier with the Suby) i didn't disconnect the engine loom from the motor just removed motor with it disconnect from ecu and (for the Suby) trans computer. Then atleast any other things you disconnect from the engine loom is a possible problem if it doesn't start.
I think I should be a fairly straight swap though. All standard wiring on a standard motor. Can't go too wrong other than immobiliser it shouldn't give you too much trouble. Immobiliser cuts injector pulse and nothing else. So if she turns over but doesn't fire check as always check spark and fuel if you have both of those you have a fair idea what it may be.
Mal aka madmagna can help with immobiliser issues. Just send him the ecu and he should be able to help. It might pay to send him a message.
I owned a daewoo about 5 years ago. No character and not that great to drive but they keep going and very cheap.
That's lame being home only couple of days a week. I couldn't do that I like my bed way too much.
Sounds like you have a cool project on the go. If you were closer I'd offer you a hand. Sound like my kinda project

yep rego will be rather easy. as i owned the te and was registered in my name prior, all i need to pay is rego - tac - and numberplate fees
stoaked i dont need to pay stamp duty or transfers again.
for rwc i'm not going to mention the loom swap anyways. but there isnt anything that would need to be engineered as i'm using the original te 3.0 motor.
just means it has a few extras they never had in the cabin in 1996.
nah motor is yet to come out of either car. thats the basic plan i was going to go by, or just label everything if i feel the urge to unplug everything.
well here is hoping i don't upset the immobiliser.. i don't think i will.
on a funny note i'll need to write down the vin number of the parts car in the owners book of the te. for when and if it goes near mitsubishi.
hmm something to keep in mind thanks. as most cars either have a starter cut or injector cut for immobilisers\alarms.
yeah a process of elimination if it won't play ball the first time. but i'm doubting i'll have such issues, as there seems to be so little that can be plugged into the wrong spot bar a injector or two
true.. i'll have a chat to mal when i get stuck into the swap to see if it can be disabled. if not.. we'll see what happens
ahh my sister bought hers a while back. yeah not a powerhouse, but it will do and she likes it.
hard not to like a\c (works) elec windows, power steering, and a 4 spd auto. and for being a little 2 litre.. goes well, even on dirt roads.
pity resale is so crap on them. as she picked hers up from a dealer (trade in) for the sum of $350 with 130 thou on the clock and the timing belt was done not long prior to trade in.
parts are easy to source mechanically too which i'm going to like. i'm looking at the espero as a camira\pulsar in a party frock
it does blow being so far from home, but its not too bad as i have my things down in melb anyways.
only reason why its not being done here in where i am renting till jan.. is the landlord will freak out, and a sloped driveway aint fun if i could do it in the shed at the olds where they have 10 acres to play in :)
yeah it is a fun project :) just have too many on atm :(
thanks for the offer.. yeah its a pity but i'll get it done. as most of my mates work etc . i'll be doing the majority on my own.
