View Full Version : TP worth selling?

Hi All,

I have owned a 1990 TP EFI magna for a number of years, having it passed down to me from a relative. Over the years, it has gone through a fairly extensive overhaul and has even had the engine replaced with a BRAND NEW motor we found in the back of a car shop, still in original Mitsubishi packaging (I will post the pics of the engine once I can find them, they were taken on an old camera phone). The engine at the time needed replacement as the original had been treated before my time quite poorly, and the thermostat had never been replaced thus had caused the engine to run cold consistently and bored out all the cylinders into oval shapes. Due to a cracked set of stock exhaust manifold, this was also replaced with a set of Lukey extractors. The engine also has the blue-top injectors, the roller rocker conversion applied, and a K&N air filter.

The car has been used by quite a few members of my family over the years, as I myself own a different car now, so the TP has been largely unused and is simply taking up space in the driveway and costing money in registration. It still works perfectly, aircon even works, and the transmission is even in reasonably good condition (although occasional slip of the 4th gear end clutch, which is fairly common and an easy fix with these).

Since most my family has moved on and started families and such, the lack of modern safety features (airbags, ABS etc.) mean the TP hardly gets used any more by my family, and as such I am weighing up whether there might be any interest in the car club for the TP? I would prefer the whole car as a package be moved on (I could organise RWC, it is currently registered) rather than part shipping, as my time is heavily constrained. If there is no interest, I will most likely just eBay or trade it in, but given it is somewhat rare to find a brand new engine for a vehicle of this age, I figured I would give you guys first opportunity; especially since a brand new engine likely has a lot of mod potential.

Let me know if there is any interest, and I might consider starting a thread in the sales yard.

Dave

It's a shame to have to let it go after all that work. I would have bought the motor off you in a heartbeat about 2months ago, Ive just done up a TR roller engine for my TP. It sounds like a good, honest car...I hope you find a good new home for it! Cheers

What's a TP Magna worth? The answer I'm afraid is not much. I have been asking myself the same question, as i will probably be retiring at the end of the year and it has been suggested that we get a new car then. I am tempted to keep it though, as it has been (touch wood) the most reliable car I have driven and it would cost at least $28,000 or thereabouts to buy a new car of the sort I would consider to be a good replacement.

I renewed the registration on mine about six weeks ago, so I suspect that is more or less what it is worth.

Many KM on the car?
Got any pictures you can put up?
Sounds like a reasonably good example of a first gen. They don't fetch much currency unfortunately.
I'm ever so slowly expanding my Magna collection and haven't got a 1st gen so I'll be sourcing one when funds allow.

From memory, it is about 162,000... but I will confirm tonight.

I have found the images, and provided I can find the time tonight - will upload it.

Keep in mind, the 162,000 is of the car itself. The engine has probably done 20,000 if that. Everything else on it works fine, shocks and brakes were replaced a few years ago and it has new tyres (stock steel rims though, unfortunately - I could never justify alloys!).

It also has 4-speaker Pioneer speakers, a Pioneer Head Unit and a Fusion Sub. Central locking is also installed, although currently disabled as one of the rods is slipping slightly and confusing the mechanism. That is an easy fix, that again just needs me to find time!

I have just managed to get back to this, the car has 162,404 km on the clock. The engine was however replaced probably about 20,000 km ago as I have mentioned - although I will need to check the service book as I seem to recall I made a note of the figure back then.

It seems I cannot upload images to this forum... what would be the best way of posting images without having to sign up for something? There is no attachment option any more...

Alright... so I decided to bite the bullet and signed up with Photobucket, after reading some posts on the forum and finding attachments are disabled...

Anyway, the image size is a little too large to directly show here (my fault :headbange) - but they are posted on photobucket at the below album:

As from the pictures, there is a couple of minor rust patches, but I did a lot of work on it a few years ago and managed to treat and seal any typical rust areas the first gens suffered from. There are no leaks I have been able to find on the car internally, and none around boot edge or any of the back pillars.

The bumper was replaced a while back as the clips snapped off long ago from sun deterioration, which unfortunately happened while I was driving... and as you can imagine that wasn't something fixable. I have yet to find any bumpers matching the metallic blue - so it was simply replaced with white. It is in good condition, so could be easily repainted if needed to be. I just never had the time to get to that point.

Anyway - to keep this on track, if anybody is interested let me know and I will post it up in the WTB section. I would hate to see it go to waste from a trade-in, but I really don't have the time to do things like part stripping, and I don't have space for storage either. It has rego on it until next month, and roadworthy might be possible if it's a reasonable deal.

Looks in pretty good shape, particularly with the motor having only done a small amount of K's!
What kind of $$ are you hoping to fetch?

Sorry for the delay.

I am aiming for about $1k if I can, given the car is in good working condition and one of the few rare brand new engines available. I can also largely vouch for the history since I have owned it, along with any work that has been done since. I am however up for negotiation on price if necessary.

Sorry about some of the pictures being fairly shoddy, as some of them were taken on a fairly crude early camera phone.

In the interest of keeping with the forum rules, I will post up an advertisment in the WTS section, since there does seem to indeed be at least some interest.

If you need any specifics though, let me know and I will do what I can to provide additional detail.

If anybody is interested, the FS thread for this is here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102510).
