Am looking at replacing the water pump in my NP 3.8L OCT04 build pajero and am having trouble finding an aftermarket part number .
theres like 4 different numbers which say they fit pajero's from 96' onwards but they look all the same !! plus one website says they ARE all the same pump

Yeah had the same issue when my mechanic did mine. He said it was the third one that was delivered was the right one. Maybe price a genuine one also.

I have them in stock. They are the same number as the 3.5 l unit. If you check with mits all have superseded to the one number

thanks fellas im having the same issue for many parts i go to look up, like aftermarket suppliers forgot that NP's were made after june 04. Half the problem is sellers using random "not actual pic of item" pics on their websites. Another site made the mention of having to use different backing plates to make the pump compatible.
Yes i seen you have a pump at a reasonable price, was also looking at doing the timing belt as well.
found out dayco do a complete kit KTBA128HP for around $400 delivered. Im thinking of going that way

Just be very very wary of that tensioner, is a massive job to change it if it stops working in 20k

IMHO if the original tensioner has given no problems, and isn't leaking leave it in there, rather than risking an after market tensioner going stupid on you after a year or so.

with other cars ive had, aftermarket tensioners held up fine, so it never really occured to me a Dayco one would give troubles. But im sure madmagna has had some sort of negative experience with them, keen to hear back about it
i may see if i can afford a new genuine one if theyre not too much

The Dayco kit will only contain one genuine Dayco item, the belt. Other parts would be from other sources. So quality of the water pump and tensioner may be questionable. They will have no manufacturers' name on them, unlike parts from a Mitsu dealer. All Dayco has done is to obtain the parts and boxed them up for your convenience. If they bought cheap junk you may come to regret it.
Same for a similar kit from Goodyear, actually.

I recommend changing it while you are there. My mechanic said the same and the day after timing belt was changed the tensioner started making noise. Had to go back in and get it changed at 5x the cost of what it would of been if we had changed it when the car was apart.

Sounds like it would almost be cheaper going the Davies Craig Electric Water pump+controller route (and using a shorter belt).
Something like this:

Or go the aluminium route:

With a Pajero with that many k's I would agree 100% and I would also dish out a few extra $$ and get the genuine tensioner
Although we are still waiting on stock from Japan we do these tensioners genuine for the $175 mark
