View Full Version : Battery draining overnight
Hi guys,
Have a problem where the battery is draining overnight to the point where it wont start, radio wont power on, central lock only just works etc... The battery connector terminals are clean, its a brand new battery, the boot light turns off when closed, no visible lights are left on. The remote is acting weird though (but has been for at least 8 months prior to this problem). More likely than not it will end up at a auto electrician but just wondering if anyone has encountered a similar problem and fixed it?

Thanks in advance.

Charge the battery, leave it connected in the car as normal for a few hours, then feel the alternator. If it is warm or hot, one of the diodes has gone tail up and the battery is draining through the alternator.
This is just a guess, based on what happened to me. lol
If not hot, disconnect the battery, put a multimeter set on Amps between the battery terminal and the disconnected lead. This will show you how much current is being sucked out. Then start pulling fuses in the engine bay fuse box, one at a time, until the current drops to zero. (or almost zero, some parts of the car normally draw some power when everything is off). This will tell you which circuit is drawing power - must be a lot to drain the battery overnight.
Once you have identified the circuit, we have a better idea of what to look for. Get back to us, pleez!
Haven't recently installed an amp/radio/refrigerator/etc which doesn't power off when you pull the key? Just a thought . . .

Nothing left plugged into the power outlet in the storage console between the seats??
Thanks for help guys! narrowed it down to being the something to do with the Aircon, the console unit seems to still stay on, its drawing about 2 amps :| I did notice the lights on the aircon button flash weirdly. sounds like a sticky relay or something? has anyone else had any problems like this? or any hints on where to find the relay?
Cheers.

Relay Box in engine compartment, pax side. Rear relay closest to driver seat
Unplug it - you should hear a/c compressor clutch click if it is stuck on - or swap with horn relay and you will soon know if the relay is stuck in "On" position :)
