in the next couple of weeks I'm going to pull apart the front doors anyway cos each of them has a minor internal issue so I'm wondering can anyone recommend some COMPLETELY plug and play speakers for the doors and the rear shelf? I don't want to re-wire anything, I don't want to cut bigger holes, I'm not interesting in adding an amp, I'd just like the exisiting setup to be a bit brighter and have a fuller range.
Names models and vendor appreciated!

JB Hifi supplied me some Pioneer speakers the same size so no mods needed even rear speakers cover remain, sound quaility improved but TJ head units (mines a Sports but i think Solaras had the same one) are not real powerful so it wasn't a miricle cure.

Ive got Sony spilts in the front and kenwood 6x9s in the back. Same as Deano, my factory rear 6x9s covers still go on and the fronts fit in with no modying at all. Sound wise, it made a difference but then again, my headunit retails at $2,200

Yeah I think that's the thing - it'd be about finding better speakers that weren't watt huggers. Any idea what model the Pioneers are?

The rear speakers are easy - they are standard mount 6X9" - alpine, pioneer etc. should fit OK - I use alpine 3 ways, fairly efficient...
For the front speakers - they have unusual mounting holes - you might have fun getting some that will fit without drilling different holes...

Any speaker should fit right in, some may need raisers to keep your existing setup but these are like $15 a pair, if i was you, try and keep your original covers rather than putting your new covers on if they are expensive speakers, makes potential crooks think your speakers suck :P.

I have 6" splits in the front, the 6" speakers are in the doors (obviously), they fitted straight in the hole but the screw holes didn't line up so my mate and I made up some mounts out of a think sheet of metal. Just cut it out, made some holes to match up with the screw holes on the speaker and another set to match up with the ones in the door.
Sounds like alot more work than it is.

From memory they're only held into the plastic door mount by self tapping screws so as long as the shape is good, drilling new holes shouldn't be a big issue

Or if you're really lazy like me, and don't have a drill, the plastic is soft enough that you can screw straight into it without pre-drilling :D

i got some clarion 160w 2 ways in the front and some alpine 3way 250w 6x9's in the back. Absolutely no cutting, drilling or fiddling around to do at all. Simple and you cant tell that i have replacement speakers in it as they fit behind the factory speaker grills

Yeah sounds like exactly what I was after - do you remember the model numbers or where you bought them?

Most guys just replace the Standard Deck and are immediately impressed.. It is the Power of the Head unit that is depressing , not the Actual Speakers..
7.5Watts for the Cassette Deck or 14 Watts for the CD player is nothing compared to a 35W or 50watt aftermarket CD player.. I woould replace this followed by the Speakers.. It may be Only your Deck that needs replacing..
6inch or 6.5 inch will fit into the front doors..
6x9's with a shallow cast and without a Humongous magnet will fit straight into the rear deck..

it should mate, all third gens have a 6x9 hole in the back. However quite often it has a 6x9 hole which has a peice of metal screwed over it which is only a 6" hole. Maybe thats your issue, you havent removed that second peie of metal. If all else fails take it to a installer, they wont charge much to install some rear speakers

Depending on what TJ you have, yes just a deck will do to begin. If you have the earlier ones or the exec those 15W eurvox speakers will remain shyt.
It would be rare for you not to find a speaker that is 6 or 6.5inch that will not fit in your door, and if it doesnt im sure a 6 or 8 mm spacer will fix it. I have put both Fusion coaxials ( 6.5inch) and Boston splits ( 6inch ) in the front no worries.
The hardest thing about the 6x9's is getting them out using a stupid screw driver, how they dont fit is beond me, magnats on those are not that big, have a play and im sure if you worked out how to get the standard ones out then putting the clarions in should be a problem. :D

I think the problem is usually fitting them under the stock covers...

Some Tubbing of the Factory Hole maybe needed for the Clarions to fit??
Grabbing a pair of pliers and evenly bending the inner circle part down a little all the way around may help the cast of the 6x9's settle down a little..

edit: Im driving up to Ballarat this weekend and am gonna try and install an amp tomoz to plug my rears into for the rear passengers... Cbf wiring up the headunit cos I got no highpass :( Got too many amps lying around the place so may as well take advantage of them...
