Recently my 2002 kj verada has developed a squeaking type sound after I have stopped in traffic and then when I drive off for about 20 seconds I hear a squeal type sound like the brake is stuck on or the handbrake is on etc. It does not happen when I brake, only after I move off after having had brakes applied. I have not had any work done on the brakes recently so was curious what others thought may be the cause.

Your handbrake drums and/or shoes may be worn or require adjusting.
Mine are doing the same, presently.

Front disc pads may also be very low and letting you know that they need to be replaced
I've got a similar problem -- intermittent squeal from the back of my TE. It comes and goes -- occurred last week on the way to work, but after stopping (and having applied the very loose handbrake) it disappeared. Also a squeal/grind sound on reverse, very intermittent.
Local mech can't find anything wrong with it, so I've asked him to just tighten the handbrake up for the moment -- and we'll see what happens from there.'
(What's the worst that could happen?)

Remove the rear rotor, properly clean the backing plate and brake shoe, often on older cars the shoe needs to be replaced anyway. Reassemble and make sure all contact surfaces for the shoe to the backing plate are lubricated, adjust correctly and most of the time will be fine from then on.
Thanks mate, will give that a go.
