Hey everyone so I was hoping someone might be able to give me a bit of help, see my handbrake hasn't been working for as long as I've known so I decided to have a look and well I've fixed the right hand side and that alone will hold the car on a steep hill however ideally I would like to get both sides working.

Anyway I discovered the the little kind of bracket/adapter that is attached to the parking cable and bolted on to the backing plate, which also holds the brake calliper on has snapped so the cable is only attached at the very end and well because of that, pulling the handbrake does nothing. I don't know if this part has a name and my description probably isn't very good so I've added some photos to hopefully make things clearer.

So on this diagram from the manual I've put a red square around the part that's broken.

And this is what it looked like on the right hand side of the car which wasn't broken

But this is the broken one

So my question is what can I do? Is this piece replaceable or do I need to get a whole new cable in which case can I fix it or solve it some other way as id rather not spend money on an expensive cable that I don't 100% need.
Thanks in advance and if it helps the car is a 1998 Mitsubishi Magna TF

hi and welcome to the forum

to replace that part it comes as a whole cable assembly. its around $80 from memory for a new OEM Cable from mitsu.you might also want to check that the pin (the cylinder in the enlarged box) that holds the cable is still there

had mine snap on my TF as well(except the actual cable snapped) and had to get two new cables.

The cables arent expensive, labor for fitting them is.

IIRC from when I upgraded my cables it will be either find someone who can weld that back on at a small cost or replace the cable.

If you are handy you can get one of these cable from your local U Pull It and it should only cost about $13

Thanks for that. Also I'm fairly sure the rest of the parts are there and the broken adapter is the only problem.

Alright thanks, well I think I will see if I can find someone who can weld it for cheap. Otherwise how hard is it to replace the cable? I would consider myself pretty handy and I'm familiar with U pull it so I'd be willing to give it a go if its not too hard.

Replacing the cable is easy. I did mine in about 30mins.

Wouldnt weld if. If the weld snaps and your car rolls and kills some one, good luck explaining that to the coroner.

For the sake of $13 and half hour of your own work or $50 labour, id get it done my self

Dont bother welding it, will melt the outer cable, fuse the inner and make the bracket brittle and end up snapping again.

Is not hard to replace it and much better in the long run

Easy to replace, remove the coin bin from the centre console, under there you see where the cables hook onto a t piece, the cable goes from there, under the console, under the mound in the back floor, through a rubber grommet to the underside of the car then its just a series of brackets that hold it in place IIRC a 10 or 12mm socket makes easy work of those.

Simple really.

I cant imagine if it snapped again it would cause any kind of malfunction apart from the handbrake not working, but like you said if there's a chance of the weld snapping I might as well get a new cable from the wreckers.

Thanks for the help, I think that's the way I will go and I'll get down to Upullit when I have time. Replacing it seems pretty simple so I don't think I should have any problems with that. Thanks again for everyone's help

I've also just remembered I wanted to ask, do I need to get the cable from the same year car or will say a 97 magna do? And does it need to be a TF or is the same cable used throughout various cars?

Anything from TE through to TJ will do.

Does it need to be a 98 as well?

TE's are not a 98 nor is a TJ so no. Any model from TE to TJ used that bracket they swapped them out for a much better design which was the KL.
