G'day everyone,
Bought some new headlamp globes for my TL AWD VRX. For the life of me I can't get the Hi/Low 3 wire connector off. The owners manual states to squeeze the sides to free the clips and gently remove connector, then remove the dust cover etc.
I'm squeezing the sides and still the stubborn bugger won't budge. Any suggestions before I reluctantly pay someone to fit these globes.
Cheers
Craig

I need some advice from people that have changed headlamp globes on TL/TW magna's please..... Yes I have searched and not found an answer to my question of releasing the Hi/Low connector from the globe.
Does the back of the black connector need to be flipped up in order to remove the plug off the back off the globe?
I feel if I keep pulling on this connector the reflector will crack. I thought of removing the spring clip in order to free the globe complete with dust coverr and black electrical connector, then separate the parts.

We're not ignoring you, its just not a readily changed item in TL - KW.
I've changed mine, but didnt need to look up any manual, its was straight forward...
Its just getting to them that is the problem....
I found this thanks to Vlad...

I've read through that thread and I understand once parts are removed access is easier. But how does one unclip the connector?
How did you unclip the connector?
I don't want to pay someone to do a rather straight forward DIY job. I just would like to know how others have removed the connector.
The connectors can sometimes be a b**ch to disconnect if you think you were squeezing on the clip. If the area you are squeezing does not feel springy then you are likely squeezing on the wrong bit so get a torch and have a look where you meant to squeeze.
Edit 1: Haha, Shoot, I got that from another forum member who I cannot remember the name of.
Edit 2: From memory, you have to squeeze towards the back of it (where the wires are) and not the bulb end.

Nothing like having a fresh look...
While looking at the back of the globe/connector/light assembly, rotate anti clockwise from 12 to about 10 o'clock. I only checked the H/Beam..
I checked this on the RHS, with the water bottle removed, removed dust cap, removed once twisted anticlockwise, there is no keeper spring....Its part of the twist to lock assembly...
The water bottle can be removed for the RHS, and a well known cheat around here is to remove all the bolts for the fuse box, and gently maneuver it out of the way for access to the LHS.
And handle new globe with a clean cloth/napkin or tissue. You dont want any oils on the globe, body oils or otherwise...

Yes, the highbeam is a twist type.

The Hi/Lo is right pig, there is no squeeze catches on my plug.
It just pulls off... Albeit with great difficulty

Yeah, I know, Thats not what the manual says.
But I just went out and removed the Hi/Lo globe from the car, and put it back in.
Globe goes in Thickest leg up, reset keeper spring, push in and up, slide rubber cap over the rear of the globe and push the electrical plug back on... Refitted bottle...
Who knew...

Thanks fellas.
I'll give it another go, hopefully things won't break, as while I was trying to remove the connector by pulling on it, the reflector was moving quite severely near where the globe is situated.
Local Mits dealer said plug needs to be squeezed and pulled at same time, and is a real mongrel to get off.

They can be a sonofabitch. Same sort of squeeze-type plug on the TJ, though the reflector's different. As advised, best thing is to get crap out of the way and give the plug a wriggle as you squeeze it. You don't need to open the back of the plug. It could be that you have to push it in a bit as you squeeze to disengage the lugs. My passenger side is ok but the driver's side is a total pain.

Don't do what I did which is crack it and rip it out.. Ended up having to remove the entire headlight to fix it which is an even bigger pain

Just did mine tonight.. put a set of Osram Night Breakers in my TW VRX
It's a pain to pull the connector off.. I've tried everything and ended up using a screw driver to ply off the connector off the bulb. I just rested the screw driver where the connector and the back plate of the bulb meets and hold on to both of them and twist the screw driver. I can only do that on the driver side as there's more room to work with. Then wiggle it out while pulling.. which took a while until all the sudden....POP!
So yeah don't have to push anything on the connector but just simply wiggle and pull.
Once you've got it out and plug the new bulb back in, its so much easier to pull the connector back out again. I think the connector is just jammed after its been sitting there for a while.
Hope it helps :)

(Y)The screwdriver trick works.
If you are dexterous enough, you can peel the rubber back and release the spring. Then put the driver between the plug and the globe, so no pressure is placed against the reflector...:ninja:
