Hi all,

Having more tailgate problems, In addition to lots of rust, and a locking unlocking problem in the past ( i cut into the plastic and would use a screwdriver to unlock it from the inside)

The tailgate does not always lock down when closed, the latch/locking mechanism does not always engage.

now the tailgate is heavy enough that it doesn't open while driving, but I like to surf/camp/fish etc. and don't want to be leaving my stuff in the car with an unlocked boot.

I had a look at the locking mechanism, cleaned it, didnt see anything that looked like it was broke or fell off, but thinking the screwdriver in the hole may have done soemthing.

If you have any ideas let me know, I've been looking for a tailgate at nearby wreckers and haven't come across many cars from this age group.

was thinking if I really had to I could drill/bolt some gate latches on and use a padlock, but that would be just ugly, lol

Thanks

Jason

With mine I have to press down heavily on the handles to get it to latch - either that or drop the tailgate from a height. In my case it probably only needs adjustment but I'd rather have it tight than rattling around. Try some WD40 or similar on the lock in case the plunger is sticking.

Is the electric lock unlock motor binding causing the rod to in the wrong place when you are trying to close the tailgate.
Pretty simple mechanism (except for the electric side of it)so not too much that can go wrong usually just wear.
Might just need to adjust the striker plate.
Have you tried with the tailgate up using a screwdriver to push the latch to the closed position and see if it works? Vee

I was having trouble getting my tailgate to fully close. Found it best to close with my hand flat against the bottom of the tailgate - ie behind the catch. Closes with moderate effort that way; must have developed some flex.

Sounds like it just needs a minor adjustment. Should be able to drop it from 2-3 inches and close easily. Undo the striker plate and move it a little. Vee
