Hi guys, first of all thanks for all the great info on this site,it really made the job much easier. I basically stripped the complete front end and rebuilt her. New struts, ball joints, replaced lower control arm where ball joint flogged out its press fit,new discs, stubs, bearings, driveshafts, all the stuff I've picked up over time. Built up a fresh TR engine and had the trans freshened up with new frictions, seals and band. All back together and mostly happy with it....but, the idle was always a bit harsh, the old mounts were trashed so put in decent mounts, engine runs great, but idle still a bit harsh when in drive or reverse. I've adjusted the tps and the idle as per manual,I can hear the throttle pedal switch operating a solenoid in the trans when its running, but doesn't seem to change the idle harshness when its operated. Also,I think there may be a minor shudder at light to moderate throttle in 1st and 2nd gear, when under wide throttle it seems fine. The 1/2 shift also seems a little soft, but not too bad. Imthinking maybe the kickdown band may need adjusting? the idle problem however is a mystery to me,as i dont really know what the throttle pedal switch does To the transmission,im guess it reduces the pressure solenoids operation to drop pressure until you take off?I'm heading out to the trans guy to get him to check it out and maybe check pressures etc,but any info you guys can throw in is much appreciated. By the way, both ecu and tcu have no fault codes. Thanks again!

This is a quote from the factory service manual: "The accelerator switch is an on/off switch mounted on the accelerator pedal bracket. Its purpose is to signal the (transmission) control unit what position the pedal is in, i.e. released or depressed. The information signals the control unit to engage second gear with the vehicle stationary at idle, thus reducing idle vibrations and vehicle creep."
Don't expect the vibrations to cease altogether but they should be noticeably reduced. For instance on the efi TP sedan I just bought, the vibration at idle in drive is hardly noticeable whereas my carby TP gives me a back massage unless I put it in neutral.

Thanks for that,I'm definitely getting a back massage, and its efi of course. There is no real difference between, idle harshness in reverse,or drive,if I move the throttle pedal a bit to operate the switch it doesn't really change much, but I can hear a solenoid click....something's up. Thanks for the comparison with your tp,at least I know it should be a lot better than it is now!

Well I got it looked over, the trans guy confirmed the pedal switch operation is ok ,as the manual says it reduces creep in drive and it does that. I think the sikaflex in the mounts may have firmed them up a tad as well. If the car is well and truly warmed up and used for a while the harshness is better,Im thinking the mounts may be a little softer when hot. I will fiddle a bit with idle speeds,I've noticed a sweet spot where it is pretty smooth, but its higher than the 800rpm idle the book says.apart from this issue all is great, got a wheel alignment after all the work, the old girl is pretty straight! Camber looked really good and toe in is now spot on. Got r134 in the aircon and it seems pretty decent, better than I remember it working when it last had gas in it ages ago! Just the headlining to do and give her a good clean and detail and she's all done!
Thanks again guys, those info posts are priceless,I did the lamps in the digital dash,so easy when you know where to look for the screws etc to remove it,saves a lot of fiddling around!
