Hi guys,I'm going to remove my power steering reservoir and replace the supply and return hoses since they're pretty old and stiff, and there's a small weep from one. After I clean out the reservoir etc can I use Dexron 111 to fill it up? It's just that I have some Nulon Dexron here and won't be using it for much else.....I would happily get the proper stuff if there's any issues, just curious. Thanks

The manual says you can use Dexron II. It doesn't mention Dexron III.

Thanks for that,I've just got a Gregory's manual, all it says is Mitsubishi power steering fluid, but its certainly not as good as a factory manual. Pretty sure the Nulon can says for use in any trans requiring Dexron 2 or 3,so it should be fine. I'll use it unless anyone else has any bad experiences. Thanks for the fast reply, have a great weekend.

Valvoline recommends Dex III up until July '90 build
Castrol recommends a generic PSF (most of which are DEX III based anyway), Mobil and Penrite recommend a multipurpose ATF, also until July '90
You'll be good to use DEX III unless its built after 7/90, which all recommend genuine fluid (p/n AW329392) be used, not sure how or why it differs though.

Funny you mentioned that, just looked at the castrol site and saw that,my rack and pump have been rebuilt a while back so I'm guessing the seals are ok with dexron 3. Not sure on the build date, will check but if its per July I'm looking good.thanks again!
Just checked, she was born May 1990 so Dexron 3 should be sweet, the pump and rack are the originals that were recod years ago so I know they are not from a later tp.

I just did some research on Wikipedia and found that Dexron III was not released until 1993, so that is a good reason for it not being mentioned in the TP workshop manual: "In 1993, GM released new Dexron-III fluid. It is generally backward-compatible with transmissions using earlier Dexron fluids or Type-A/Suffix-A fluid."

Well I replaced the old weeping hose ,drained the reservoir and filled it with Dexron 3 , the old fluid was pretty discoloured,brownish/ red and it did smell a bit different to trans fluid,im guessing it was the Mitsubishi fluid....the end of the story is it all seems fine with Dexron, steering feels fine,no leaks and nice clean fluid in there!
