Hey guys,
My dad's TF Magna is making a repeating knocking sound coming from the engine while its running. He hasn't had a service in 3 years  and our mechanic has told him a service should fix it. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what it could be? i have offered to pay for my dads car service cuz i owe him money and i hate to see such a nice car go unserviced for 3 years  , just wondering how much it's gonna set me back, thanks guys.

I had this for a while about a year ago on my TF (not that I think the model is the issue), service after service, it would return... till they found a cracked gasket somewhere (sorry I forget) but it was some sort of escaping air in my case (coming from the car lol ), replaced the cracked gasket, noise gone! I occasionally get the odd tapping sound but it usually settles down.
Yeah, hopefully a service does fix it... A three year service drought is getting pretty risky, long overdue! Who has been doing the oil changes during this time??? I may be flamed as I am not expert, but service costs vary heaps especially depending on how many kilometres the car has travelled. Also once they start looking, knowing the car has not been brought in for a while, they conveniently find x, y and z wrong, so you sort of want to be careful otherwise before you know it they tell you the cost is going to be around $500.
Going by memory I can pay anywhere between $180-$250 on average for a service on mine depending.
That reminds me... mine is due soon!
Good luck with it... don't go in green!

I have a 5 spd TF Sports, is your dad's car a manual? I have been told that the knocking noise in the front end of mine is simply "transmission rollover". Is this possible/probable, and that there is nothing I can do about it.

thats a bit crazy lol...

My Camry developed a knocking noise whilst driving

turned out to be a cracked piston.. shortly after which the engine seized (after trade ;) ).. id get it sorted asap if i was you

Just thought i'd let you guys know that it's something to do with the hydraulic lifters. He's getting it fixed when he can afford it :S.

Engine oil will gunk up & do that if not changed regularly. You should go get a sample of the oil... its probably thick like tar.
