View Full Version : noise from rear right wheel when steering left
this lately became more obvious and seems to be escalating gradually
i am hearing a noticeable but not too loud of a rattly tacky noise from rear right wheel when i am steering leftwards, say at higher speed slight left turns or low speed sharp turns
its also present very vaguely when driving straight and relative to speed. if i gently touch the brake pedal, at times it seems like i can feel the vibration synced to the noise
few months ago before i had the brake pads changed, this noise was present occasionally while steering same way above at same location but as a pad squeak (pads were glazed badly) but gone away after pad replacement.
any ideas/suggestions?
cheers

At a guess I would say it's a wheel bearing on it's way out.

im no expert at this, but this is more like a wobbly noise rather than whine, and it only increases turning or steering leftwards, not both ways.
wouldnt bearings cause a loud whine and increase noise steering both directions?
BTW how did you manage to have have 215k posts in 3 years

Post counts can be faked. lol Right, Robin?
Bearing like noises at the back can be caused by:
A defective tyre.
Stones caught in the tread of said tyre.
Dragging brake shoe.
Warped disc and dragging brake pad.
Damaged shield touching the disc.
And finally . . . .
Defective wheel bearing. lol
Don't assume the worst first up. Needs looking at, for sure.
When the fault is really getting bad, you will probably hear it all the time, but it is currently louder as you turn left because the car is heeling over to the right and loading up the right side more than the left. Jack the right rear wheel and spin it by hand. Also, rattle the top & bottom of the wheel and see if there is any movement. There should be some movement, but minimal. You can compare with the left side to get some feel for what is hopefully a good wheel bearing. Whilst it is jacked up, check the tyre for stones and damage to the sidewalls. Also check the way the wheel spins - is there runout (wobble) on the tyre tread?
thank you
i tried most of the suggestions, wheels and tyres are bought brand new about 4 months ago
brake pads are new at same time, installed by mechanic
when i push or pull wheels "full force" they dont move. neither of them
when i rotate the rear right one, it slightly touches the brake pad at some point
my gut tells me this is caused by the brake mechanism, but i dont know anything about these,, whether they re adjustable, or loose bolts, or maybe the disk was damaged at some point in the past.. i cannot say
the shielding around the disk seems intact, and at two weeks ago i pressure washed behind there in case something got stuck.
i will take the car to a mechanic monday or tuesday, im just trying to figure out if this can be fixed by tightening a bolt or similar easy solution.
