View Full Version : KF Xi climate control - A/C goes warm when car is stationary

Hi everyone,
Only has happened this summer, the last 8 summers the A/C has been perfect.
Verada KF Xi (1997). So the A/C works great as long as I keep moving, but it seems when the car drops to idle, after a few moments warm air comes out. Get moving again and cool air comes out.
So I had the local mech do an A/C service (replace drier, refridgerant, and oil), and its better than ever while the car is moving... and still warm while idling.
What should I be looking for?
Thanks in advance,
Ian.

This may sound like a very stupid comment, but make sure you have the air set to circulating, not fresh. As in the air recycles inside the cabin, instead of getting it from outside the car.

Is the radiator fan working?

@ M4DDOG - yes it is set to recirculate, I double checked on the drive home, thanks for the reminder.
@ jimbo - is the A/C fan on the drivers side? Well it's not coming on... so we may be on the right path here. The main fan (on the passenger side) only comes on spinning slowly...
I guess I need to check those relays next to the battery now?
Will come back with how I went tomorrow.

One fan IIRC the drivers side will come on when the engine gets to temp, then the passenger side should kick on pretty fast once the compressor is engaged.

Sounding like a relay is dead

All relays and fuses related to the A/C in the engine bay are tested and working fine, so I need to look at the fans next.
Does the fans on these cars ever give trouble or are they known to eventually wear out and stop? My car has 305,000km.
I pulled the plug from the engine temp switch on the thermostat housing (the larger temp switch of the 2) and the passenger side fan came on full speed. Turned the A/C on and the other fan didn't spin up but at least the A/C into the car was cool at idle. Check engine light came on as well but went away after I turn the engine off and on again... passenger side fan didn't come on and A/C went back to warm at idle.
Maybe the engine temp switch?

Either the low speed coil of the motor does not work or the relay is not working.

I had the low speed coil go on one of my fans. It did not noticeably affect the aircon though.

Turned out to be the A/C fan, I removed it and tested it as per the Haynes manual, neither hi or low speed was working. A replacement from a local wreckers got it back up and running today.
Thanks to those who responded with assistance. 40C here in Melbourne in a few days time so I'm glad I got this sorted this weekend.
Ian.
