View Full Version : Replacing power window regulator

Had a window regulator go on me and went to wreckers and they had one so took it home. The battery on it was a little corroded, my battery was still working so I tried to match the regulator to my battery. Problem was I could not get the cable around both the pulleys, after winding in the spool the cable seemed to be too short to get around the pulleys, try as much as I did, I could not get it on. Maybe the unit was faulty but is there some trick to getting the tight cable around the pulleys?

Regulators don't have a battery. Do you mean the electric motor?
As for getting the cable around the pulleys - they do it in the factory, so it must be possible.
Can you unmount one of the pulleys, get the cable on and then put the pulley back?

Thanks Max, yep it's an electric motor. pulley is on pretty tight too, not real obvious if it can come off. Hoping that someone here has done it, either that or maybe the one I got from the wreckers was damaged and prevented me from getting the cable around.

As soon as you replace the motor the cable will unwind, has nobody here had this happen to them????

I changed the whole regulator. It is held in with 4 studs and the motor has 3 of its own.
You need to remove the speaker and the trim support that the door card bolts to.

No I doubt anyone has had it happen to them as most replace the complete unit and not worry if there is a little rust on the outside of the motor as this will not hamper the operation of the unit given the motor is sealed
You can rewind the cables but is a bugger of a job as you have to make sure the window support is in the precise position and you have the cables wound correctly

Yeah I figured that no-one may have done it. I'll source a complete unit and use that one. Apparently it's a bugger of a problem on most power window regulators not just the magna. I had hoped that someone may have found a way as someone has to have been able to do it at the factory etc.
