I'm considering not installing the 6G72 DOHC and just leaving the SOHC and modifying that due to the price of another engine.
My question is if i go Stage 2 camshafts and shave the heads (plus other mods) but leave the standard piston heads will the valves run into the piston tops.
Has anyone done this mod to any of their magna's??
Can i get away with just a piggyback computer than installing a full Haltek to run the Stage 2 cams.
Cheers boyz 'n galz

I think it makes more sense to spend say 4 grand on your existing motor than spending 6 grand on another yet stock motor. I know the DOHC is a great motor with plenty of power but the 12V 3.0L has plenty of grunt and with a few mods could fly.

I think you should be able to get away with it. Best off talking to Dave@rpw.
You could get a greddy emanage or something like that, they're a lot more flexible and feature-packed than say a unichip or something apparently. I dont know too much about them unfortunately.
If your after cam specs or anything I have a complete technical teardown and rebuild manual for the sohc 12v, dohc 24v n/a and dohc 24v twin turbo.
I also bought myself the Haynes TR/TS manual, based on a complete teardown and rebuild. Awesome investment for only about 40 bucks :)

Yep, i bought myself the Gregory's Manual to the "Magna / Verada 1996-1999, TE, TF series, Sedan and Wagon, 3.0L and the 3.5L"
and its magical! 8)
it has wiring diags and shit loads of step by step turtorials on how, what and should it be done, oh, best of all, myself not haveing much tech background in this field, id have some confidence in 'tweeking' mah magna :D:D 8)
oh its only like 45something bucks, but kmart had the 15% day yesterday so i picked it up at a scoop price 8) 8) plus my mate was on the tills and i got a further staff discount 8) 8)

Unfortunatly they dont make ones for te 4cyl TE...
But alot of the generel stuff is the same between V6 and 4cyl.
I went to the local Library.. Got 10% of the Book Photocoppied for free... It is a Reference book and such , they cannot loan it out and therefore they just give you photo copies of pages that you want... up to 10 or 20%..
Im such a scammer :D

Gregory's or Haynes, essentially they contain the same information.
As to whether your pistons need to be flycut - look at the stock valve to piston clearance @ max. lift, this is the THEORETICAL MAXIMUM you can shave off the head without flycutting. In practice you'd want to leave a few extra thou (thousandths of an inch) for the times when you over-rev it and get valve-bounce (a nasty thing had damages camshaft lobes, valve springs and seats).
You'd probably have to watch your compression ratio before you worry about flycutting - anything more than about 10:1 and you will have MAJOR headaches with knock/pinging (due to our crap fuel).
If you're gonna pull the heads off you may as well go the extra bit and get the block/heads blue-printed. This way the main bearings tunnel is aligned, the cylinders are perfectly round, the piston centreline is exactly perpendicular to the crank centreline and the block deck is parallel to the crank centreline. Then you balance your rod/piston assemblies and fully balance the crankshaft and re-assemble it. A baffled sump and uprated oil pump might be a good thing too.
Since you've done this you can put flycut or dished pistons in (dished will lower CR if you shave the block/head too much). Then maybe you'd port/polish the head and do oversize valves, maybe a higher lift cam with a bit more duration (so valves are open a bit longer => more air:fuel in/exhaust out). Port match the manifolds, change FPR and maybe oversize TB. CAI, decent exhaust system, maybe something like an MSD ignition system to ignite it all and a piggyback ECU/chip to cap it off.
A few grand and you have a nice street motor that has a wicked bite to go with it's deeper bark. ;)
