View Full Version : Another handbrake enquiry

The other day when I was working on the card (before heading away for Christmas), I noticed the right rear park brake doesn't work. The cable is fine, it is the parts that attach from the end of the cable (the little hole part of the cable) into the hub. It appears some of the parts are missing.
I am looking at fixing this when I get back in a couple of weeks, because currently I am not comfortable with just one wheel locking, especially if I have to park on a slope! (which I won't have to do on holidays thankfully). I have not taken it apart to see exactly what is missing, I would prefer to only do that once if possible :).
Are the parts in the picture below available for purchase somewhere? I have a TF Magna.
For anyone interested or contemplating doing this themselves, here is a glimpse of the 5 parts that we are talking about... Parts 2 and 3 in the photo have a tendancy to take a walk

Oops, I meant query not enquiry!
If I got these from the wreckers, what would I have to do to remove them from the wreckers (u-pullit) vehicle?
Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas!

how do you know the parts are missing?
the only bit thats exposed to the outside is the hook that attaches to the cable. you need to remove the brake rotor(and caliper). then you will have access to the handbrake mechanism as well as the brake shoe.
removing the rotor might be a bit tricky as you ll need to loosen the tension on the handbrake by using a flathead screw driver and adjusting it through the hole on the rotor. Once the handbrake is eased off and the rotor is free to spin, you can pry the rotor from the hub by threading a screws into the 2 threaded holes on the rotor.
when putting the rotor back on, just do the reverse - make sure to tighten the handbrake.

All those parts are available from any Mits dealer, most will need to order them in

My TL was missing those parts too. Based on Mal's advice I just ordered them in at my local dealer. Took me a couple of hours to fit them as I was a total Magna n00b at the time.

Cool thanks! It's just not a comfortable feeling relying on one wheel for the handbrake, certainly wouldn't trust it on a hill! I'll order the parts I think, better to have them and not need them than to take the rotor off twice. Even if I have the parts there I'd still use the new parts and keep the old ones as spares.

What are the part numbers? I rang a dealer and they didn't know what I was talking about! I tried explaining it as best as I could.
Thanks

Not sure if this fits across the whole years of production.

Thanks, I've seen the complete repair kit on Ebay for $91 that includes both sides (PBR or Banksia brands, seemingly identical), such as:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PBR-PARK-BRAKE-MAJOR-REPAIR-KIT-VERADA-KE-KF-KH-KJ-1991-02-/181070035440?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AMagna&hash=item2a289d79f0
but I probably don't want to go to that extent with the drilling of existing rivets, rivetting etc.
Those part numbers are very helpful, thanks! However, what is the part number for the third item in the first post pic? It's not very clear, but I believe the 52941R and 52941L is the bracket, not that lever. If you look closely at the diagram, and look at the pic in the link above, it looks like the item at the top right, and bottom left, for the items inside the right side of the picture. Also, in the diagram it shows the rivet going through the hole :)
Since the parts aren't expensive I guess it doesn't really matter if I don't need it, but I would rather have it before taking it apart.
Out of interest I looked on the rockauto website, there are two park brake repair kits listed, and neither of them have that lever thing (the third item in the first post pic that I got from another thread)... I'm sure it is required though? GTVi said, as quoted, part 3 typically goes missing and I'm pretty sure it's missing from mine.
Anyways, here are the two rockauto kits, both missing that item 3.
Carlson: http://www.rockauto.com/getimage/getimage.php?imagekey=3463716&imageurl=http%3A//www.rockauto.com/info/Carlson/17464.jpg
Raybestos: http://www.rockauto.com/getimage/getimage.php?imagekey=3883662&imageurl=http%3A//www.rockauto.com/info/Raybestos/H17464-1.jpg
So it seems common for it not to be included in the kits. Does anyone knows the part number for it?
Thanks in advance, and thanks TW2005 for taking the time to reply, it's much appreciated!

That's the one, thankyou! I can see it now in the diagram you gave.
I rang up the Mitsubishi dealer again, and ordered the lever and pushrod (AW350161 and AW350166). The pushrod part was $7.50, and in stock in Melbourne. The lever they have to order in from Japan which will take 4-6 weeks and costs $11.
@burfadel, I just went to u-pull it on a sunny day, parked my butt on the ground and gracefully in my own time extracted the part I needed. ;)
You wont need to pay for it, as the entry fee will cover the price of the part ;)
Part 2 assists in putting pressure on part 3 when the brake cable is set.
Once part 2 leaves its place, it will either disappear or will be trapped in the grease. Soon after part 3 will dislodge because there is no tension holding it in.
When installing part 2, the cavity on either end need to have the grease in there (shaped like a small cup) to stop metal to metal grinding.

Not a bad price, but 4-6weeks is a long time. No freight charges involved so probably why the wait.
Obviously those part numbers turned out to be correct.

Ah ok! I had to pay for it upfront since it has to be specially ordered in... I guess I saved a trip to U-Pullit, and trying to get off those rotors. I was contemplating that but I don't need anything else from there, whereas the Mitsubishi place is on my way to the city etc. Once I get the parts and repair it I'll let you guys know how it went.
