Has anyone attempted to retrofit the auto gearbox external filter to a (4 speed non trip_) box that doesn't have it?
My Jun 01 KJ has a blank over the hole for the filter...wonder if anyone has ever "ripped off that scab" and had a look to see if its possible???

Anyone with a wreck possibly had a look? :fruitcake

Why? what would be the benefit ? they have an internal filter.

You would have to drill and tap the casting to be able to spin the filter on and provide fluid passage ways. Doing this would get sworf inside the oil gallerys. It would need to be done as part of a rebuild. Also the surface would need to be milled to provide a sealing surface for the filter.

An aftermarket inline filter in the radiator cooling lines is the way to go.

I had this done. 2000 TJ, 4spd auto swapped out with a TE/TF ? 4spd auto with the spin-on filter. I later converted it to tippy. No problems.

Any additional filtration you have on a hydraulic system is always a bonus - provided it not restrictive. Replaceable filters are great as long as you replace them. Fortunately these spin-on filters are only $8 from supercheap.

IF this could be done there would be a huge benefit as the internal filter is barely a guaze if it is even that.

Issue is that although the casting is there it is not functional so can not really be done. Your best bet is an external filter kit, a decent one like a Derale one or similar fitted with a cooler. I know it will filter the fluid at the last point of the system but at least it is better than no filtering at all

You could "probably" drill and tap the holes, but there could be all manner of relief or check valves to add/remove/bypass as well. I'd be interested in trying, but the costs outweigh the benefit, you still have to pull the box apart. Big expense in time and/or money when a bolt on option is available.
