Well, I thought I'd fixed the car earlier, but I either didn't or I've got a new problem!

The engine is now stalling randomly every 2-3 days. Usually happens whilst driving mostly whilst coasting.I turn it over and over and it won't fire, even with the acc pedal to floor. But after waiting 5-10 minutes it'll (always) start again.

Plugs & leads & battery & alternator & fuel filter have been recently replaced. I fixed the plug on the dizzy as well. Now I'm thinking the problem seems more fuel related.

I've heard the fuel relay can play up on these. What does it do and what should i be looking for?

Car is 1990 tp wagon efi auto.

the fuel relay either works or it dosent

any other symptoms ... high fuel consumpton .idle speed . stalling going up a hill .... if so please post

the 5-10 min delay is not right at all

there is a device at the end of the fuel rail (called the fuel pressure regulator )
its a vacuume device .. it sometimes fails
its job is to maintain the correct pressure on the rail

when the engine is cold ... can you undo the fuel rail at the fuel line end
it is a banyo connection with two washers either side ..it will be tight
please use brake spanners to undo it ( if you use normal spanners you may round the bolt)
put a normal spanner on the rail bolt so you dont break the rail

if you undo the line there should be pressure ..have a rag handy ..dont let fuel get in your eyes

if no pressure or fuel in the line post back

next to check will be the isc motor at the throttle body ... (this could be your cutting out when coasting problem )
and a few other things

Well, didn't get to check the regulator, cause now she won't start at all. After a few checks, determined no fuel being delivered period. Checked relay which is fine so fuel pump seems to be gone. Have ordered replacement will seewhat happens after that...

on the in the floor passengerside rear of the wagon
you will find a plate a few screws

then screws to take out the pump

go from there

Well.....

Fuel pump came in (cheap at $45 off ebay delivered! vs $200 from Bursons), got a mech to do the job for us.

He swapped it over easy enough. Turned it on - no power! Checked the new pump with a battery, all good. Found no power running to fuel pump.

He called in the sparky next door - they checked fuel relay again, pulled it apart - all good. Then traced the wiring - 20cm further along was a plug - contacts in there were dirty. Pulled it off, new plug fitted and hey presto!

Can you believe it?! Anyway at least the problem was solved (and I've got a new pump!), hopefully this helps someone else out there. Why the extra plug in the wiring - maybe extension of the wiring harness for the wagons?

no one has found this problem

you said 20 cm along ....but like where in the car ?

was this connector easy to get to

now you will have every active wagon owner hunting for it to check it out

Thanks for the updates, good to hear you got it sorted. Think i might do a voltage check on my pump to make sure its getting full voltage..It's funny what little things you find, maybe someone never fitted the plug together correctly in the factory and the terminals burned? I traced a prob with my rear number plate lights on my wagon a while back, one bulb didn't work,no voltage to it,pulled it apart to find the wire was pushed into the brass terminal with the insulation still on it,it must have never worked from day one.just unscrewed it stripped the wire and away it went, for the first time in the cars life...

The wiring runs down from the relay along the side under the passenger carpet to get down to the rear of the car - not sure if it runs directly under the passenger feet or more likely along the door sill. Hence it would suddenly cut out, say on the highway - just because the passenger moved their feet!

In terms of wiring - this could be just my car, due to someone elses dodgey repair job at some point in life.

Onto the next problem.....
