View Full Version : Engine oil: Is a few mm over the max ok?

Ah, I topped up the oil level yesterday after a service had been done because it seemed too low on the dipstick and now its showing about half a cm too high at cold.
Is this going to cause any lubrication issue or is it ok to drive the car when slightly over the max like this? (Going on a longer trip tomorrow). Alternatively is there any easy way to drain a small amount off without removing the drain plug? Thanks in advance for advice.

Not a problem.
I always overfill by about half a cm.
Bigger safety margin if my Magnas ever decide to start burning oil.
I never let them drop below half way between the marks. On my TL, which does country km, that currently takes 7,000 km, TJ does city and never drops between changes.

Thanks Max. I imagine half a cm will be approx 250ml or so of oil? I never notice any drop in level between changes.
I wonder how much extra would need to be in there to cause foaming or where that would sit on the stick?

No idea. My daughter did add an extra 4L of oil to her first car, made a distinct crank-in-oil sound. lol

Half a cm is fine, probably ideal actually! The way I see it, the max mark should really be called a 'normal' mark, since you really wouldn't want your car running half way between min and max, which seems logical but isn't good. Funnily enough it seems when you put in half to one cm above their max mark you seem to burn less oil, as in not noticing it drop over the lifespan of the oil.

I think it probably wouldnt have mattered as u all say, but i had it drained and filled again to the correct level anyway.
Oddly, the oil looks a lot cleaner now than after the first change. After the first change it was looking slightly dark, now it looks perfectly clean, practically transparent. Of course i didnt change the filter the second time, since its still new, but now i think i should have.
I wonder how much of the old oil is still trapped in the engine when its being drained and filled, even when the filter is removed?

OCD much?
About 300 ml to 500 ml, depending on oil temp and how long you leave it draining.
Don't put the garden hose in the oil filler to flush that last bit out, OK? Lol

Lol - well i've been monitoring the oil past couple of months with the new HPR5 and new rocker cover seals and need it to be close to the mark so i can tell if its moved!
