I am planning to get my car serviced shortly.
It has reached the 100k Km mark and previously the mechanic had used Valvoline oil but the fuel performance was not great at all, was about 14-5l/100km.
A friend of mine used (fully synthetic) Mobil1 engine oil in his car (Lexus F-Type) in the last service and he said that he gets around 10l/100km avg.
So I was thinking of getting the (fully/semi synthetic)Mobil1 engine oil as well for the current service but unsure what rating should I get. :ninja:

Would help to know what grade of oil was put in your car, not just the brand.

At 100k and if the engine is in overall good condition, you could consider putting in a 5w40, or a 10w40/50 synthetic oil.

Putting in an incorrect grade oil can impact on your fuel economy, among other things. I put Pentite HPR15 (15w60) and not only did the car run like a dog, it was returning about 12-12.5L/100km, whereas it normally runs at about 9.8-10.3L/100km on Shell Helix Ultra 5w40.

I use 10W-40 as per the user manual which is available in many brands such as the Penrite brand that I use, around $49. (got 5L Penrite full synthetic on special from supercheap auto on boxing day for $40, what a steal)
Others use 5w-30 in this forum and find it great.
As long as you get full synthetic oil, your car should feel and go a lot better.

Hopefully your fuel economy will improve a little, but don't expect it to be anywhere near as good as the Lexus F-Type. lol

lol..even though he did say that his fuel economy used to be 14l/100km and changed to 9-10l/100km, I dont expect miracles (Y).

Personally I fail to see how changing oil will take a car down 4l / 100km also really can not compare the lexus to the 380 either

We use HPR15 here in the workshop since it has gone to full synthetic. Reason for this is because the full synth in the 5 or 10 gets used up too fast, synthetic oil works differently to semi or mineral. I have not found cars (nor mine) running like a dog or using tonnes of extra fuel. Unless you are using 80 grade oil to be honest I fail to see how oil will make a car run any differently.

Remember also at 100k you are up for timing belt, plugs, trans if not done already. Dont get sucked into doing belt only either as this can all fall apart later down the track

Agree with MadMagna.

Don't expect to see any real fuel consumption change with a change in oil grade.

People always appear on this forum from time to time saying their third gen or 380 seems to be using 14-15L+ per 100km and expect something is wrong with the car.

Unfortunately, they are a big, heavy car. They can get fairly remarkable economy on the highway for an oldish V6, but around town with stop and start driving - a heavy car uses a lot of fuel.

My manual 380 does 8L per 100 at highway speeds. And it does up to 15L per hundred running around the CBD.

If you want good economy around town, buy the new Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid. They are claiming around 2L per hundred!

My 380 runs the best with 5w30 grade, 15w40 or 5w40 is just not responsive enough, FC and idling is the smoothest with 5w30 too.

This with mine also. Castrol Edge 5-30 has been the pick for me. Normally grab a couple of them when on special at one of the majors for around $ 45-47.

Went to Arrarat and back... The average was 9.4l/100km...
City is 14.1l/100km.

Is fully synthetic oil more prone to being "burnt up"?

Nope, in fact Synthetic will withstand higher temperature compare to mineral, that's the benefit in using fully synthetic.

Is it more likely to get used from leaks, for example valve stem seals leaking?

Comparing it to the same weight semi-synthetic or mineral oil, the difference would be negligible.
