View Full Version : Bit of a fuel smell...

I replaced the O2 sensor recently because firstly the fuel economy was crap (i'm yet to measure what its like now) and I could clearly smell unburnt exhaust fuel. Since changing it i've noticed a different smell, completely raw fuel.
I did notice it at one point when stopped at the lights, though it was another vehicle but since then i've still noticed some smell when I stop and get out. Havn't noticed it in the cabin since but do still notice it when I stop and get out

The first and only time i've noticed it in the cabin, the climate control was bringing in fresh air. 90% of the time it sets itself to recycle so perhaps that might hint its coming from somewhere up front where the intake vents can suck fumes?

Where are some key points to look for fuel leaks given this information? Again it doesn't smell like partially burnt fuel, moreso fresh fuel vapor

Open the bonnet and have a look around. Look for fuel stains on the fuel lines, fuel rails and charcoal cannister, and use your nose. Look for slit hoses. Check PCV system is working.

Why are you running with the A/C on recycle? It is dangerous - if you have an exhaust leak, it can kill you. If you are on fresh air, the car will be pressurised and the chances of exh gases getting in are severely reduced.

It's so damn hot here that the computer almost always puts it on recycle. I'd prefer it on fresh but if I do that it kicks out of automatic climate mode. Flicking back to auto it will change to recycle again

If you manually over ride a function all the other functions remain in auto, its just the AUTO light goes out. The temp will still be controlled and the fan will ramp up and down as req.

Had you just filled up?

Fuel tank cap is worth looking at. Don't buy anything other than a genuine one.

No, I noticed it today just sitting at the lights with the air on 'fresh'. There's definitely raw fuel vapor somewhere. If I sit idling for a while its actually quite strong so i'm thinking possibly an injector

Thought i'd post an update. Yes it was the fuel cap. Couldn't smell anything at all in the engine bay but sure enough a very strong smell near the tank. Replaced the cap and no more smell
Didn't think it could possibly be THAT strong in the cabin from a dicky cap. Even though it still held pressure

But fuel economy is still pretty crap.
Average about 10L/100km on the highway with cruise control on 100kph and a bit of spirited overtaking. Had it as high as 15L/100km around town and that was AFTER changing the O2 sensor :eek2:. Gonna clean the MAF sensor, throttle body and use that foamy spray in the intake and cylinders to remove as much carbon and crap as possible

How much are the fuel caps from mitsubishi? I need one for my car for the same reason but haven't had the time to head out there
