View Full Version : tie rod removing
Hay guys
I tried removing my rack end tie rod and the tie rod just below the cv joint on the control arm with a basic tie rod remover tool. Had no luck at all seperating both tie rods. Is there a certain way or tool to use? My cars a 2003 tl vrx if that helps.
Cheers

Do up the remover until there is a fair bit of tension going. Then hit the arm just on the outside where the tie rod bolt goes through it... Should do the trick. Good luck!
If you can, tension the removing tool, then brace the tie rod end with a heavy hammer/axe or whatever, and hit the other side of the rod end with a smaller hammer. It should pop easily then.

Are both these tie rods pressed in by any chance

Not pressed in.
Tie rod ends have a taper fit.
Take off nut, reverse it and put it back on thread a couple of turns to protect it, put heavy hammer behind the part where the taper sits, hit other side with another hammer. Don't hammer the tie rod end itself. After 20 or so blows shaft of tie rod end will pop out. Careful not to damage the threaded part of the tie rod end.
The other end of the tie rod is screwed into the end of the steering rack, has locking washer, all under the rubber boot.
