Got my new 1995 V6 Magna exe the other day. I just need some rough prices on how much it would cost to fix a few things.

One door lock will lock but not open with key - $______
New set of tyres - retread $______
- recommdation $______ brand/model _______
General service - $_______
Tune up (optimise gear ratios and stuff) - $______

As you can tell I don't know much about cars but I do know you guys are :)

Also what do you think of Ultratune? Compared to say your local small mechanic

Cheers guys

Everything you mentioned depends on whether you have a TE Magna or a TS magna. ie new shape or older shape?

He did say 1995, TE's came out late 1996.

You can get retreads for about $40 dollars each but I'd go for a standard tyre of about $80
each.

General service should be about the $150 to $200 mark. Extra cost will occur if they find any
other problems.

Ultratune used to be crap but they now (at least in Adelaide) have RAA certification so are
somewhat better then before.

Yea, id try and stay away from re-treads, theyr cheap yes, but terrible in wet, and wont last as long.. Pay a bit extra and get genuine tyres, theyr all pretty cheap these days especially 15"s

I dont know about NSW but the ultratune here in Vic is terrible, theyr general service was cheap, and they cleaned my car.. But they overcharge on everything else. They quoted me $700 for replacing my radiator hoses and flushing the radiator. And i got this done for $180 at Goodyear. They also quoted me $450 a side to replace my driving shafts!!! Which i got done for 100 a side!

Plus they replaced a rediator hose on my mates Exa, which fell off a day later, the car overheated, damaged the engine, and they charged him to repair it.. :doubt:

Anyway thats my experience with em..

stats your in Sydney? try the discount tyre factory in windsor rd Northmead (nr cumberland hwy) they have about the lowest prices in sydney, and haggle them for a few extra dollars off. Don't go for retreads, I've used many sets and most of them were trouble and they only last about 15'000km, you'll get about twice the k's out of new tyres if you drive normally and wheel alignment is good.

don't go to ultratune there damn expensive, you would be better off looking for a dealer who does fixed price servicing and then getting someone cheap to fix the faults they find. I know a good workshops in Auburn that does fixed price work at low rates.

The lock could be done either by a dealer or a locksmith at about $100 (I guess) or the cheap option is a secondhand lock and key from the wreckers.

Also just as a side note retreads are illegal on the front wheels.

Serious? Is this nationwide or just some states?

Yeah Vlad he originally put 1996 Magna, hence why I asked which model it was. So I assume he just edited it to 95 when he realised. Either that or I'm blind. Probably the later :D

Hehheh, you know what, you looked at 1995 V6 Magna and read 1996 Magna. We all tend to
do a bit of pattern reading now and then.:D

It's in the ADR's so I guess that's nationwide.

Are you sure? The documentation from the RTA (NSW) doesn't say anything about it. I can't find the ADR documentations though.

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi09_rev4.pdf

All it states is that retreads must have markings and warnings on the tyres itself.

Although i do agree with the majority that retreads are potentially unsafe esp. in the wet. I do not recommend using retreads.

Killbilly, there is no law against retreads being fitted on the front axle of passenger cars or light commercial vehicles that I know of. As said B4 all retreads have to have a manufacturer number and speed rating stamped on them. I found that retreads stick to the road well because the're a very soft compound but i was always having problems with case seperation where the belts inside the tyre break and cause a bulge in the tread and eventually blowout (i took em off before this) some did this within 100km of use. It's the "remould tyres" that don't hold the road in the wet as they have heaps of sidewall flex.
