I have a problem with my 2002 TJ Magna Exec Series2 and was hoping to get some ideas. The engine and power steering are cutting out just before I come to a stop; I start slowing down, put my foot on the brake, the revs drop, the battery light comes on and it cuts out. Dash is still lit up. Car starts up fine every time.

I had the battery replaced. The guy who replaced the battery said the car should run okay, but that there must be a problem with the alternator because the multimeter read ~14.1, when it should have been 14.5. It's a heavy duty Bond battery. Same as the old one.

I've had this happen a couple times before, months ago, but those times it happened only once then it was fine again. It was always when I was coming to a stop on a decline. The first time was going down a very steep parking structure exit ramp. Then months later it happened again at an intersection at the bottom of a steep hill. The battery guy said this had to do with the water level in the battery, but I feel like that's been ruled out as a cause, because the new battery hasn't made a difference.

It all went to crap yesterday, after I cleaned up the terrible HU install from the previous owner. Now, doing a lap of a parking lot at low speed requires ~8 restarts.

So these are the notes i've taken from other threads…

maybe I've blown the alternator fuse?
maybe doing the Learning Procedure for the Auto Transmission will fix it.
remove and reconnect all BEM plugs and ignition antenna plug might do it.

I can't go check the fuse right now cos my Magna didn't make it home yesterday :( She runs fine at higher speeds so I think I can drive her to a mechanic if I must. Any ideas?

Classic symptoms of a failed ISC.

I got around this problem by using left foot braking and keeping the rpm up with the right foot.
Temporary fix, takes some practise.

HINT: wreckers have ISCs . . . .

I had the same problem and for 25 odd dollars, thought Id take a stab at the ISC... Fixed it. Even if it didnt fix it, being a common problem, doesnt hurt to have a spare :)
Good luck

Thanks for the help guys! Great forum. I've been reading through the other ISC threads on here too. Thanks for the info on how to check the ISC with a meter MadMax.

Any ideas on where to pick up an ISC around the Melbourne CBD? My Magna's temporary home is at the Docklands.

Any Mitsu wreckers, or if you fancy a drive out East there's a lot of Magnas at Pick-a-Part in Kilsyth, most with their ISCs intact... though at least one's missing, it's in my car now ;)

Well I got lucky. I did a reset on the ISC and then went through the N-D N-R Learning Procedure and everything is solid. I assume it was the ISC reset that did it.

So thanks to everyone! I would not have known what to look at if I hadn't been pointed in the right direction. I think i'll go grab a spare one from the wreckers just in case, but it all looks good for now. I'll update this thread in the future if something goes wrong for reference sake.

Thanks again!
