hey guys I'm looking into redoing my 2002 TJ's interior, I wanted to do the whole car in a black/White theme.

now for the question, Is it possible to dye or paint the dash, the whole thing because the crappy grey color isn't doing it for me.

I know how to do the interior plastics but have no Idea if the dash is even possible, if its possible let me know how to do it and if you have any photo that would be awesome.

thank you :)

Dash is possible, however being such a large area it will be hard to get a consistent finish, it will cost a ship load in rattle cans.

For the dash which is the soft Vinyl you would use Vinyl dye, however im yet to find it in a liquid form as opposed to aerosol as I would rather run it through my spray gun so I dont have such a small fan, this is what would cause a patchy job.

Exactly why i didnt spray my dash, as it would be too hard to get consistent finish for a large area with a can. I found this, its however water based, so not sure of durability.

Alrighty, I wish it was as simple as point and spray haha

Seems easier to just fabricate a new dash, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't pass road worthy haha

Awesome interior btw :)

Don't color the top of your dash any color other than black or very dark grey. A light color will give you terrible reflection back onto the windscreen, which greatly reduces visibility, especially on a sunny day. I painfully learned this when renovating a car years ago. if you dont believe me just spread some sheets of white paper on top of your dash and drive around.

i used VHT vinyl dye on my dash, only ended up using 1 can on the dash itself - was grey before painted black/red

That looks amazing, is there any chance you could give a step by step on how to do the dash, as I will most likely be attempting this next Sunday/ Monday

Thank you :)

heres how to do the dash:

1) remove dash from car and wipe off all dust etc.
2) in small patches apply wax and grease remover, i used the spray on stuff. key is to spray a little bit, then clean it off with a CLEAN rag. you need to keep spraying and wiping everytime wit a new rag until there is no dirt when you wipe with the rag. This is the most time consuming bit.
3) once you are sure everything is clean, go over it again and ensure no dirt is picked up
4)apply the paint - i used VHT vinyl dye. Use 3 - 4 coats:

1st coat - very light spray
2nd coat - light spray
3rd coat - more heavier
4th coat - heavy/wet coat

ensure you leave 10 -20mins dry time between coats. the paint process should be completed within an hour. let it dry 3 - 4 hours before handling. if you can leave it out longer the better, as if you put it back in too quickly you will have a paint smell in your car which can be nausiating and will take ages to go away.
