Hey everyone just wondering which cold air intake setup I should install in my magna I was thinking about using the 'drainpipe' setup just using a plumbing tube from the stock air box going down closer to the ground or removing the entire stock Intake and using a stainless steel pipe with a pod filter going near the headlight. Has anyone tried both of these and which one would give me better gains? I'm not worried about looks just want some good gains

Hi, I'm pretty sure cai systems don't work, it's been tested by MCM and I believe the lost power by a few kws.

Don't quote me on this tho haha

They work and don't work. Mitsu did pretty damn good with the intake system on these cars. If you really think about it, the snorkel is essentially a CAI and at the same time a RAM intake. It literally sits right under the hood, what I did was pull the rubber off that lines the front of the hood. I've also been toying with the idea of keeping the front half (before the filter), and replacing the back half with a K&N Pod so that the front can direct cold air. I think someone here went as far as customizing it so that the pod filter is fully enclosed.

You'd have to get a tune and many other things to make any usable power, and I've also heard that it robs your low end in these things.

I've also toyed with the idea of removing the resonator under the snorkel and running a pipe down lower. Help lower intake temps, but haven't done any real world testing.

Seems like fitting a K&N panel filter would be an easier way of achieving the same thing

There is no net air flow in the resonator. All it does is to absorb and generate small pressure pulses which the act 180 Deg out of phase to cancel out the intake noise (and it does it pretty well too). So removing it would not lower (or raise) the intake air temperature.

Leave it as it is, dont take off the plastic on top of the grille as that was put there to stop heat soak from the radiator and air con condenser from rising into the intake.

K&N on Magna's do NOT give any extra power, this has been tested by so many people so many times but people still insist they work. May sound a little different but that is about it.

A good clean paper filter is all you need unless you are going boosted and then that changes everything. There is not a NA set up out there that I know of which requires anything other than what Mitsubishi put there in the first place

Always have a bit of a chortle when there is talk of a "cold air" intake modification.
Nice weather here over the past few days, ambient air temp got to over 40 degrees C, air going into the engine will be that no matter whether it is sucked in through the standard intake or from behind the headlight or under the bumper bar.

It's not so much about getting colder air I just want to get more air into the engine because the stock Intake seems to covered when you close the hood how is it even getting a decent amount of air?

It gets as much as it needs for a factory motor.

The intake setup is one of the best setups I have seen from the factory. To the point where I wouldn't touch it. It is in the same territory has Honda exhausts - Honda spend a lot of effort getting their setup tuned right and 95% of the mods made loose you power rather than gain.
Unless you are making a lot more power, that factory setup is going to give you all you need. There are much bigger restrictions elsewhere if your looking for more power...

I think Mitsubishi may have this covered.. It was designed that way after all, and the fact that little to no improvements are noted when fitting alternative parts is testament to its design.
Somehow I don't think a $39 Saas pod and a length of polished tube and a couple of silicone elbows is going to one-up a proven design.

Regarding the ram effect, you need to be doing more than 300 km/hr in order to get any measurable increase in airflow, so that ain't gunna do much either...
