Hello,

My transmission is beginning to fail. The first 3 gears are grinding while I accelerate and once I hit 4th and 5th it operates as normal. This was not due to mistreatment or lack of servicing, nor any other direct incident but apparently a common thing with Mitsubishis. My car has done 240 000km.

I was told it'd cost $4.5k for a rebuild and was told it isn't worth it on the car as the value has declined so quickly. I'm happy to buy a new car but it isn't exactly in the budget.

Does anyone have a different view on the;

Cost of repair?
How come this actually is?

I don't feel like I was being ripped off in the price, or at least I'm hoping he was trying, as I was recommended to him by a reputable name in the SA car industry.

Thanks,

Anyone quoting you on a rebuild is just giving you a rough figure, actual cost will depend on what parts are still serviceable and which need replacing. If the planetary gear set, pump etc are still good it will be a lot cheaper, for example.

He should really just quote you a firm price on remove and replace labour, and then a ballpark figure for the rebuild.

Tried sourcing a low km 5 speed? May be a lot cheaper.

240,000 km out of an auto is quite good, no matter the make of car.

Buying a transmission from a wrecked car and fitting that would be a lot cheaper.
Being a 5 speed though they are rarer.

There was someone on these forums selling a 5 speed auto from memory not too long ago but can't remember the details

Would he need to get a TJ AWD 5 speed or would an auto from a TL or TW AWD fit?

GTV are not AWD, they are FWD

A used box will cost in the area of $950 for a tested used 5sp auto. We have sold a few in the last few weeks but have 2 left in stock.

Grinding is not a "common" issue with these, it is generally the Planetary set on its way out, the car usually has days not months before it fails all together.

You need a TJ specific trans as the TL and TW ones will not work unless you also use the TL/TW ECU to match the trans

Thanks guys, such a shame, I knew the first car for me was the Verada.

Now I'm going to have to jump ship - perhaps a Ford Falcon G6.
