Hi guys my nan has a 1995 ts exec, and recently her car requires an occasional jump start even though the battery is charged, her mechanic said it's a common problem with these cars and he wasn't able to fix it, so I thought you people with experience might know the fix
She's 77 and can't really be jump starting her car every time she needs to pop down to the shops
Thanks guys

I find the fault description a bit puzzling. If the battery is fully charged as determined by a hydrometer check, then the problem is not the battery.
Quite often, starting problems are really better described as 'cranking' problems. Invariably these are due to a faulty electrical system in some way.
I note your mechanic knew what was wrong but actually couldnt help even though it was your nan, and in my world, every body's nan deserves the best. Anyway, if your nan can jump start her car, she is one hot nanna.
I found with my TP (4cyl)that where the main cable from the battery to the actual starter motor was bolted to the electrical connection on the starter motor, that the nut had worked slightly loose. Tightening this fixed the problem.
In general, measuring the battery terminal voltage with an analog voltmeter while cranking the engine, can tell you if your problem is battery or bad connections. When cranking, the battery voltage will fall an amount depending on the state of the battery. A good battery will crank the motor at around 10.5 to 12 volt. With a crook battery, the voltage can fall to around 7 to 8 volt. Below this voltage the starter may not crank at all. But if the starter wont crank, but the battery voltage remains relatively high at say 9 to 10 volt, then it is possible you have bad connections. It is hard to check everything with the design of the starting electrical circuit, as it is almost completely built in to the starter.
Hope this helps you to get started on solving the problem, and I'm sure others will assist you with info on the 'they all do that' problems..

is this a 4 cyl of V6
are both the battery terminals metal type or plastic type if not metal replace
check earth strap from battery to chassis is it tight and clean
check the cable from the battery positive terminal is clean and tight to battery connection
then at the starter motor itself
does the starter motor click
then solenoid problem
v6 starter dont know but its at the front underneath and easy to swap out
for the 4 cyl
the starter motor ring gears and cogs internally are plastic
they do fail
new starter
post back if you think it is an ignition problem
