View Full Version : Cost to fix a loose ceiling?
The fabric on my sedan ceiling is loosing its grip. I am wondering if it can be fixed, or need a new one installed?

How much would it roughly cost for a workshop to do it in Sydney?
Thanks

Firstly when you say ceiling I think gyprock ceiling in your house, this sir is a roof lining/ headlining.
What has happened there is the old glue and foam have let go and the material is sagging. You need to remove the headlining from the car, strip off the old material, scrap off the old foam which will now have the glue in it, clean the base up, then purchase some headlining material from somewhere like Daley's, along with some contact adehesive, spray that on and lay down your new material.
Or fit a decent second hand one from another sedan.
To remove it you remove a pillars, b pillars, c pillars, grab handles, sun visors, interior light and then the hard door rubber up around the headlining, remove 4-6 black clips, lift out front passenger door.
Average cost to fix these can vary from $150 to $300, sometimes even more.

I got my XR6 Turbo done at Hy-Tone Motor Trimming in Riverstone - they have a standard charge of direct replacement $250 plus GST, so $275. But here's the trick:
To save money on production, many cars (the Magna included) have their roof lining chopped at each end rather than rolled or hemmed. That's why they tend to sag at the end first - the sun and heat destroys the foam and adhesive.
Hy-Tone (and presumably other trimmers as well) roll the material back over the top of the board and pin it there. This minimises the chance of it sagging at the ends. They guarantee their work for the life of the car (or until you sell it).
I'll be taking my TJ there in February to get it done as it's sagging at the back to the point where it's starting to block my rear vision through the mirror. But I'll also be getting them to do it in black, and line the pillars to match for a full-black interior. This will obviously cost more than $275... :-)

i got mine done for $220 a few month ago, best thing i ever did to the car as i'm a tall guy that always rubbed his head on the roof lining when it was sagging.
Thanks for your feedback. Would anyone have a workshop recommendation for somewhere in inner sydney, close to station? Riverstone is a bit far from me and they quoted $350. Thanks!
