View Full Version : A/C starting to get a bit weak. Best course of action?

Weak is subjective, but it feels to me that it is.
I'm up here in Cairns where its somewhere in the vicinity of 'surface of the sun' hot with humidity high enough you don't need to turn the water on in the shower to hear the drops. Awesome :tired:

Needless to say, the A/C has been on constantly since I bought the car a few months ago.
In recycle mode is what I would call 'acceptable'. I can put the climate control on 17 with fans on full blast and I won't get cold enough to have to raise it, but it will get a little nippy after a good 10 mins or so (if its been in the sun, couple mins in the shade). Can leave it on 20/21 on a long drive and its ok. I can put my hand over the A/C vent and keep it there, so its not exactly freezing
However if I put it on fresh air it's what I would call 'unacceptable', i'm still sweating and it just doesn't feel that nice.

I'm thinking this is subpar for a Verada and it should be A LOT colder than that? if so what would be my best course of action. I actually replaced my last car precisely because the A/C stopped working, turned out to be the condenser and the price of that with work was over $800

first step, check out the radiator/condenser on the front of the car, hose it out and try and clean out any buildup of crud in there.
Blocked fins will reduce its effectiveness to shed heat.

Next, get the A/C checked at a workshop, it probably just needs a bit more gas.
They will most likely tell you that you need to replace the receiver dryer and a bunch of seals while you are there, Not a bad idea to do it if you have the cash spare.

edit, if i think back to ages ago when i was spinning spanners, we used to stick a temp probe in the vents to test the output.
I think we used to say 4-6 degrees after a few minutes with the fan on the 3rd setting was a good reading.
