View Full Version : Reverse sensors won't cancel when towing (reversing)

I have a 2007 Series 3 SX with factory reverse sensors and a factory towbar wiring harness. When I'm reversing with a trailer on the reverse sensors won't cancel out. It's very annoying that they constantly sound when reversing. Can anyone tell me if the reverse sensors are supposed to cancel out when reversing with a trailer on?

hi mate
same story on my 380.. it was annoying.. but then i dnt really use trailer very often. One option is to just unplug the sensor unit in the boot when you connect your trailer... i guess its easy fix

Thanks for your reply mate. At least I know there's nothing wrong with the system. I wired both of them myself although it's easy with the 'plug and play' set-up. I was just unsure if I'd missed something. Didn't think of disconnecting the beeper. Great idea!!

If I Towed often enough, sounds like a good reason to mod something.
Where is the buzzer for those sensors, wiring in a switch might help, or if you want to go OTT, there's a thing called a foglight cutoff relay, that can be wired in, using unused wires in the plug you have... Only good for towing the same van/trailer tho..
My pick would be a time delay off switch...
Press a button, 3-4 mins reversing in silence..

Bit fancy, and depends if you often tow the same trailer, and if it has spare prongs on the plug, but maybe ground out a wire to one of the spare prongs and use it to make a relay disconnect the sensors when the trailer is plugged in.

The buzzer is just velcroed to the carpet lining in the boot so it's easy to just unplug it.
I thought that the sensors had a cancelling function within the wiring but I must be wrong. Looks like pulling the wire out of the buzzer is the go for the rare occasion I tow a trailer.

What you need, and what should have been fitted at the dealer, is one of these.
Its a 7 pin trailer plug with a reed switch built into it.
It detects the trailer plug when fitted and disconnects the power to the reverse sensors.
Any decent auto elec or mechanic could fit it for you.

Yes the genuine MMAL system does have cancelling system, my unit had the opposite problem thought trailer was attached when not. Also the buzzer has a switch on it so that it can be turned off, no need to remove it.

Thanks for the replies. I have a MMAL system installed. It was as easy as plug and play. Might have to check my installation and see if I can see what's wrong.
How did you solve your opposite problem?

What I have done is not a fix, its a temp workaround. I simply unplugged the interconnect between the parking sensors kit the trailer kit. When using the trailer I have been switching the buzzer off until I fix the root of the issue then re-connect the interconnect.
