I guess it is a matter of personal taste but IMHO the new whitish/blue look is brighter and more modern then the original amber/goldish illumination.
For the record I used white LED globes. It illuminates with a slight blue tinge for some reason.
It will also make more sense when I install the 2 DIN Kenwood head unit with SatNav. I will be able to tune the colour of the Kenwood unit to match the colour of the climate control.
Next job is to replace the horribly scratched plastic screen protector. I wonder if Mitsubishi still have them available. I doubt it... :tired:

IMHO looks even better at night. The control buttons seem a bit whiter and brighter then standard.
There are 2 minor hot spots on the screen. I should be able to eliminate those with a diffusing filter sheet.

Looks good man :)
FYI you're better off finding a good second hand CC unit for the screen, as Mitsubishi doesn't do parts for the unit, or the unit at all anymore if memory serves me.

Thanks
I would have been pleasantly shocked if they did sell the protective screen. They would probably sell the entire unit at some crazy price.
Yep, I think I may be in the market for one with a scratch free screen.

Yeah $1,000 plus would probably be what they are asking. Although I will ask for curiosity sake next time I am at Mitsubishi. Possibly tomorrow as I need to buy new o-ring for distributor.

Let us know how you go, I would mind a new screen, however its only a thin sheet of plastic, might just make one

I will see if I can get a price / part number and post it here.
It's a piece of clear plastic but it has screw holes in the corners and if memory serves it was shaped a little. Probably not impossible to make.
I still have some white diffusion filter plastic left over from another project someplace. I'm going to see of it can eliminate the hot spots on the screen from the LEDs.

For a TJ CC unit, it is MR513448, $1557.60
The only parts that you can purchase seperate, if they're even available, are the temperature adjust/auto knob and the bulbs.

Ouch! :noway: :censored: I don't think I'll be buying a new one
I wonder if I could replace the plastic with gorilla glass or similar....thinking thinking.... :rofleek:

Well if you can get a spare unit the screens are all the same and can be swapped vice versa. Mine was clouded and i got one off a friend except a different part number so i swapped the plastic itself.

The problem is getting another unit cheap that has a perfect screen. I had a quick look on eBay and people are asking the earth from crap examples...
I was thinking of replacing the plastic with glass from an old mobile phone or something....just need to find one to fit. Glass will not scratch as easy as plastic.

IIRC no screw holes, just a little bit of foam where it meets the plastic and a couple of dimples to help locate it.

The one from my vehicle has the foam as you desribed, but also screw holes and is screwed into place. I will take a picture next time I have it apart.
Maybe Mitsubishi varied the design over the years. Mine is from 12/2002 TJII Magna.
I went to Mitsubishi today to pick up an o-ring for my dizzy (that's another story). Whilst there I had the parts interpreter look up the climate control. He confirmed what "ammerty" said yesterday. They do not supply the protective screen separately. Apparently the price has gone up. Ammerty said $1557.00, the parts interpreter told me $1583 plus tax. Inflation!

Mitsubishi sell parts at their price to dealers and then the dealer adds their markup and that varies between dealers.
I use to work for a dealer in parts and the markups I saw on parts was a joke. I remember seeing at one point 200% markup on a part.

I know what you mean.
Whilst we are on the subject. Today I bought a genuine Mitsubishi o-ring for my dizzy, which cost $8.75. I arrived home to find a 419 piece metric o-ring kit I bought on eBay had arrived. Opened it up and checked the o-rings and compared them to the Mitsubishi one I had just bought. There were 10 in the kit that were identical in every way. The kit with 419 o-rings cost me about $25 delivered.
Lesson learned...

I believe the blue is caused by the filter. As for the hotspots, maybe a resistor? It looks like some dimming wouldnt hurt... I used a led strip (3 across and perfectly spaced to line up over the two holes).
And there are so many of these at the self service wreckers! And they dont usually charge much.

I had not considered a LED strip. Sounds like it may be effective.
I have a sheet of white photographic diffusing filter plastic I had bought for another project. I'm hoping it will diffuse the light spot and make the light more uniform across the screen. It's just that the LEDs are so damned bright compared to the standard globes. It worked on the other project/vehicle. If it doesn't work I'll give your LED strip lights a go :2cool:
I've just ordered some http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141090958770?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 Novus Plastic Polish from the USA. I'm hoping to polish out the scratches on the front protective screen. I'm going to wait for that to arrive and do the whole job together rather then have to pull the console apart multiple times.

It works pretty well! The very corners are a bit duller in colour, but its not so obvious and there are no hotspots. I tried to take a pic, though the photo over accentuated how much dimmer the corners are.
Its probably a mixture of the fact that the led strip sits at the top of the hole, rather than being in it much closer to the screen... along with it having a very wide beam angle. I would be interested to see how well the diffuser filter works. If you do the led strip, it needs an external voltage supply as the one on tap is too low for your average 12v strip. I just tapped into one of the climate control wires, not a big deal.
Should be interesting to see how well the plastic polish works.
