View Full Version : Air-con performance?

Hmm, recently during the 40+ hot days we've had i noticed that the KH air-con cools the car extremely well, even to the point of being chilly. And thats when set at only about 20 and auto fan. Its never been servicedin any way.
The KL, OTOH, is nowhere as good. It cools just barely adequately even when set to 17 (flat out with max fan speed).
I thought these systems were sealed and never needed any servicing or regassing.
Is that correct?
Also, whats the plastic cap on one of the lines for, regassing port?

My TJ Ralliart has the best A/c of any car I've owned. Can get chilly on 40 degrees day. Most imports not nearly as good.

My KL Wagon's A/C struggled on the 40+ days and I accept that, in traffic I held the gears to keep the revs up so the compressor would work better and that seemed to help. On the open road it was pretty good. I also find the KL's rear vents blow cold air pretty hard much better than most other cars I've seen.

About time someone actually answered your questions lol
Some will need regassing throughout the life of a car, others seem to go forever. As the gas seeps out of the system, performance drops. How long it takes to start pumping cool air is a pretty good indication. Anything more than 5 to 10 seconds is too long.
Should be two plastic caps, different colour and marked H and L. Used by an AC tech to judge the amount of gas in the system as he regasses it. Needs 2 pressure gauges and a bottle of gas.

Same here! It wasn't too bad, I'm talking about one of the hottest days and it was comfortable in the car, but nowhere near chilly as in the other car.

Thanks Max! But gas shouldn't be seeping out unless theres a leak. Might get it checked.

My TH has never been regassed in 13 years since I've had it - (and it was only just over a year old then with ~20k on the clock then). It's now nearly 180k and is as good as the (near new) Ford Territory I have as well. Gets too cold some times.

Obviously these units have heaps of capacity. I assume it must have a slow leak somewhere and the gas level must have dropped.
Will get it checked.
Should i go to a dealer or are there air-con experts? Any recommendations?

Mine's done 423 thou and the air con performance is still fine - never serviced (never needed it) and gets plenty cold. However, I'm onto my second fan blower motor and this one's starting to make some strange sounds although the air flow is still strong.

im at over half a million kays in my KH, and neither the heater nor the A/C works :(
The heater went a few years back when the plastic bit broke during a heater hose change, and the A/C succumed to the 'lack of gas' issue about 18 months ago.

Sorry not able to help with advice on a good service agent for AC for Magnas.
I'm guessing the dealer would just outsource to a local A/C person (as some used to do in Qld).

So, i recently discovered theres a light sensor on the dash near the screen in the center.
I'm told that it informs the climate control system. I cut a hole for it in my dash mat and alls well now!

I have a TJ2 and a dash matt and myn gets done to 9 degrees before it switches off and comes back in at 12 degrees although i think it may need a leak check and re-gas i am told that it wont get much better since the climate control in the vehicle is set on minimum
