View Full Version : Sway bars and ride quality. Worth doing?

Mines a FWD verada which I quite often push fairly hard and would like it to feel less understeery and more capable through roundabouts, slaloms etc. However my first and foremost priority is ride quality and comfort. It's not a race car, it's a daily driver
My car does not have stock suspension as it was replaced fairly recently by the previous owner, however I couldn't tell you exactly what it is. It has 17" alloy wheels with 235/45 tyres
I don't know what a stock verada/magna drives like but it feels more or less like a stock car so it's probably pretty close. I've never fit a sway bar before so my questions are
Will a sway bar noticeably improve cornering without making it harsh?
Should I get front, rear or both?
Brand, rate, cost etc?
Bonus question: Why is it recommended to fit a rear sway bar to a FWD car? i'd have thought you want the rigidity closest to the driving wheels to keep them more level and even through cornering

Rather than have members rehash information that has been provided many, many times; why not do a search? The information is there, use it...this question has been covered to death already

A rear swaybar really tightens up the rear end, makes it much much nicer to drive, definitely improves handling one of the better additions I have made to my TE. The fronts already have sway bars so if I were you I would leave that one stock, putting one on the rear promotes over steer and makes the back end IMO my responsive. One thing to remember though is because it does tighten up the back end depending on how hard you push it you will loose traction a little easier if one side does loose traction, the other side follows.
What model is your car?
Cars like VRX's, Ralliarts, TL, TW Magna's these came with a factory fitted front and rear swaybar. All the others TE-TJ, KE-KJ only came with the front, a factory rear swaybar bolts onto welded brackets on the rear control arms, on the models did not come with a factory fitted bar the brackets are not welded onto the control arms, so you need control arms too, or just get a whole rear subframe from a car that did have it, thats what I did.
Whiteline make an aftermarket rear swaybar that doesnt require these welded brackets however a few people on this forum mostly have had issues with the bolts supplied not being long enough, the brackets supplied snapping and there is always people who dont trust the whiteline kit in general.
Like I said, I wanted a swaybar for my TE, however the bushes in my backend were worn so I found a TL Magna at the wreckers and took the entire rear subframe with control arms, hubs and all that still attached and fitted them to mine, best move I have made to date regarding handling I think.
I covered this here.

information changes over time and is not always directly applicable. Someone may have a different opinion after running a sway bar for a year, than when they first got it. Or have tried different wheels, suspension, etc. Different products come on the market, new members come on, some people never posted in the old threads etc etc
If we only ever asked questions once and always relied on searching for old threads, no forum on this planet would have anything new to post
I have fitted a rear sway bar about a year ago, with no regrets, it takes a LOT of body roll out of the car, this fitted with king lows and kyb shocks, the ride isnt stiff, but the car is more direct on the road and less (boaty). i only have 16inch mags with 215/60s and im happy with the car as a daily.

Which sway bar did you fit? and will it bolt up to a stock KF (as mentioned above about the mount points)

Peaandham, can you tell me when upgrading to the TL/W handbrake setup you've said that you need the handbrake cables. Which cables are these exactly, from the handbrake lever onwards or is it just some cables on the rear subframe?
Also, seeing as the rear subframe is out, I noticed there are some bushes that the actual subframe mounts on, is it a good idea to swap them out? Maybe get slightly plusher ride?

im running a whiteline 21mm swaybar, never had a problem with it, and its set on max level, i believe the kit will fit your car as well, im not running a strut brace, but instead will aim for 18inch wheels with a better gripping tyre to counter act my understeer.

Ziek how much harsher did the Whiteline swaybar make the ride quality?

Biggest change will be whatever suspension you put in it. If you want to retain comfort, you want to avoid any coilovers or super low suspension, but sway/strut bars shouldn't be an issue with how you're thinking in terms of day to day comfort. I have factory VR-X sway bar, Whiteline strut brace and a set of 8/6kg coilovers and it handles like a go kart (An admittedly heavy one with vague steering, it's still a FWD Verada after all), at the expense of some of the comfort which is a trade off that was worth it to me but wouldn't be (Quite fairly) to a lot of people.

jakeys summed it up well, the swaybar dosent really make the ride quality harsher, it just helps with body roll, you just have to find a good suspension combo to go with the swaybar. KYBs are a much stiffer shock, its not the stiffest out there, but match it with king springs and the ride isnt too bad, much stiffer then stock of course, want to shave some of that stiffness out, then use dobinsons springs.

Spetz, I used the entire cable so I need both of them, the go from the shoe, through some mounts under the car, through a grommet into the cabin and to the lever.
If you are talking about the 4 bushes, mine were good no need to change them.

Will a rear bar help with stability when towing a trailer?
The P/O used to tow quite a lot and as a result the rear suspension needs to be renewed - swapping the whole rear sub frame would make things easy for me since I need to get in there and replace all the bushes anyway.
Just trying to get the mods past the minister of finance, and safety is usually a winning move ;)
