View Full Version : Rough Idea For Major Service

If I lived in Melbourne, I'd just go and see Mal. But I don't!

I figure it's major service time for the TL which has been bulletproof so far. Would prefer to do it in one big hit, rather than cut costs and find stuff falls over in 10-20k time.

Oil change - oil penrite 10w and genuine filter supplied by me
Timing belt - has only done 75k but it's the original belt which is ten years old
Hydraulic tensioner - is this just best to do same time as timing belt (don't wanna cut corners) or can it be replaced on condition?
Water pump - is this just best to do at same time as timing belt (don't wanna cut corners) or can it be replaced on condition?
Coolant and bleed brakes - it's approaching 2 years in a couple of months since last done
All accessory belts - starting to show small cracks, are original belts
Clutch pedal sticky - can't release smoothly - maybe fluid?? Lubing pedal didn't help
Shudder when taking off - not clutch related because if I push clutch in immediately when it shudders, it continues for a second or two - maybe engine mount/s??

Will try and do rear plugs myself
Tires/brakes all fine
Air filter genuine I just did
Front plugs I just did
Manual transmission oil perhaps?

Anything else I need to think about doing while the mechanic has it in pieces?

Is doing the timing belt without water pump and tensioner a false economy?

Genuine belt kits are best I assume?

I'm guessing about 1-1.2k for the above work?

Usually the hydraulic tensioner and water pump would be done at 200,000km rather than 100,000km.

Would you prefer he replace them when the car reaches twenty-five years old, given the rate he is putting on kilometres, or when the tensioner fails and takes the rest of the valvetrain with it?

I'd absolutely be replacing both at the upcoming service, given that both are 10 years old.

Mileage is not that only factor when it comes to deterioration of components, time also plays its part.

For what it is worth, I did the TL belt at 136,000 km and 9 years. (Don't blame me, it was like that when I bought it.)
I replaced the belt and the 2 idler bearings, both were showing signs of picking up material from the back of the belt.
Everything else was ok - but last winter the hydraulic tensioner became noisy on the first start of the day, it is ok now but I'm expecting to have to replace it next winter.

Find a mechanic who has experience at doing the belt, I imagine all you will need is the belt, but be guided by the mechanic once he opens it up.
Doesn't hurt to err on the side of caution as long as your pockets are deep enough.

As for using "genuine kits", there is no such thing, Mitsu doesn't make the belts or the other parts in the kit.
Do a search to find out which makes of belts/idlers/pump/hydraulic tensioner are considered best. Buy a kit off Mal at mitsfix and you can't go far wrong. (Unless the mechanic you use wants to supply his own parts)
