View Full Version : Very strange...TE Magna high revs when going downhill

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster :)

I have a 1997 TE Magna, recently tuned and 47000km on the clock. I have a strange phenomenon occuring (well, it's strange to me anyway) which never happened with my 2000 TJ.

I have noticed when I am going downhill, even while braking, the vehicle dramatically slows down and the revs go up to about 2000-2500 rpm. It feels like a heap of air or something has gone into the engine or something.

Apart from this, I have no complaints with the car (absolutely schmicko in every other aspect) but this particular quirk is really bugging me.

Any advice?

That would be the INVECS transmission logic changing down a gear to keep the vehicle from gaining too much speed going down the hill. They disabled this feature on later cars to help improve fuel consumption.

Ah, is that what it is? I just read up on INVECS. Thank god, I thought something was wrong with the engine. I don't suppose I can disable this? I am quite used to coasting downhill without my transmission downshifting for me.

Maybe if you keep your foot on the accelerator a bit it won't do it, if so you could adjust the throttle position sensor but that may cause other issues.

I actually found today, if I downshift into 3rd whenever I go down a steepish hill it doesn't do it, so I may just stick with that :) Got to love 'new' technology from the 90's, eh? :)

It doesn't do it because you did it for it you know?
All it was doing was downshifting to 3rd by itself

I thought that was a great feature. Back in March 2000, when my Verada KH was brand new and the first time it did that i was stunned... Haha
Which reminds me that back then the "average" car was a few years old. Seems nowadays the average is near new.
When I was a kid my first car was at least 6 years old and that wasnt considered unusual for my generation. Kids today seem to be spoilt for cars, they're all so cheap now and credit is everywhere.
