I have a full tank of fuel and need to replace the petrol pump in my wagon. I thought I could syphon off the fuel, but can't get my hose into the tank. Is there another way to empty the tank? I was thinking perhaps via the schrader valve. Does the pump work when the ignition is switched on, or will I need to by-pass the fuse box/ecu? ( My old pump still works but pressure is reduced) If I need a by-pass, some info on how to do this would be greatly appreciated - or indeed any method to remove the fuel safely!

Schrader valve? Not in the fuel system as far as I know! (Tyres, yes, aircon lines, yes.)

Pump works when you turn the ignition on. You could disconnect the fuel line at the fuel rail, and put that into a jerry can somehow, and turn the ignition on.
If the tank is full, you will have about 70 L of fuel to collect and store safely if you want to drain the whole tank. You probably need to drain at least half of the tank to be able to get the pump out without having a flood of fuel being released when you pull the pump out.

Pity the wagon pump is on the side and not at the top of the tank, like the sedan.

PS. Someone who has actually done this on a wagon tank needs to chime in, I'm just blabbing on in theory. Not really up to speed on the safety aspect of draining a wagon tank.

Another possibility:
If you follow the fuel filler behind the body work you will see a rubber section clamped on between the filler pipe and the tank itself. If you loosen the clamps and move the joint out of the way, you should be able to get a hose into the tank and drain it that way.
Might be safer that way.
Just don't get a mouthful of petrol!
