Hi everyone,

I'm looking to purchase this device (or one similar) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-OBDII-HUD-Car-Head-Up-Display-System-Over-Speeding-Warning-Fuel-Consumption-/151251705192?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item23374ddd68 and I was wondering if the TJ magna Exec has an OBDII certified port that this would work from?

TIA, Pat

The workshop manual calls for a MUTII gizmo. Not the same.
OBDII is more the 380 and current Lancer standard.

This would worj on my wife's 2011 Lancer, but not my TJ Magna.

Would an adapter allow an OBDII device (e.g. as linked) to work or have they used their own standard of communication for the diagnostic port also?

The diagnostic ports are physically the same, just the electronics connected to it, and the protocols for reading parameters, aren't.

The "M" in MUTII stands for Mitsubishi, so I guess those protocols are unique to Mitsu.
OBDII on the other hand, was legally required by the USA government to be standard for vehicles sold in the USA after 1996, rest of the world followed on slowly.

Thanks heaps, that's a bugger but was worth a try :)

If you want to be able to log ECU information, the only practical tools for this which work with 3rd gen Magnas are Evoscan (http://www.evoscan.com/) and an OpenPort cable.

This is something i'm interested in. I'm completely new to the world of ECU's, I can tune carby's on bikes but EFI is a whole different game, so forgive my ignorance on the topic

Is this EvoScan thing capable of writing back to the computer to tune values? or is it purely for reading off information?
I'd be interested in retuning my car for better power and economy, as well as faster shifting response

Evoscan is a logging application. ECUFlash is the application to use for reflashing these ECUs. Reflashing also requires an OpenPort cable with reflashing support. If you're interested in tuning and ECU reflashing, you might find some of the info in the thread linked in my signature block of interest.

sorry to hijack but say if i wanted information displayed on my phone like those apps you can use(with a OBDII bluetooth adaptor) what would be the way to do this??

i know you cant use those adapters

Mines a KF so I guess that rules me out. So if I were to swap in a later ECU - which I may at some point down the track to gain tiptronic and smoother shifting - what exactly is required? Just an openport cable (~$30?) and a laptop?
I've never done EFI tuning of any kind (unless turning the idle speed screw counts) so I probably wouldn't do it, though i'd like to know whats involved and if its actually worth doing on these cars, especially in stock trim?

I don't know of any suitable solution for that appoach :(

Evoscan is available in an Android version but currently only available with a preconfigured Android tablet. It is really geared to using the larger screens on tablets than phones, at least in its current incarnation, and requires a special version of the OpenPort hardware. However my view is that it will be a while before it can be considered a mature product.

If your KF has the reflashing connector between the diagnostic port and the steering column, the ECU is reflashable however there aren't yet any publicly available definition files for it. Because of the nature of the hardware only the engine management is easily reflashable, unlike the J/L/W series ECUs where the engine and transmission control is integrated.

Check the Evoscan (http://www.evoscan.com/) website for current cable prices - an OpenPort 1.3U is fine for J/L/W ECUs but an OpenPort 2.0 is required for H8 ECUs (used in late F and all H series cars).

I want to do this too, but on a 2011 Lancer. Need the bluetooth adaptor for the car, bluetooth USB adaptor, and suitable software for either a laptop or Android tablet or phone.
Wouldn't try it on a Magna, not going to work.

I bought one from ebay, bluetooth adaptors for my lancer(CJ) it comes with a disk full of software to use.

Search ebay for ELM327 V1.5 Bluetooth OBD2

So far I have only used it via bluetooth to a laptop.

Good info! Using it with a laptop is pretty much what I want to do.
Just looked one up, downloaded the software and ran it on my desktop, no problems. Just need to order one, plus a USB bluetooth dongle.

sorry to hijack again but have another question

been doing some research and found this:
http://www.evoscan.com/android-evox-can-obdii

from what i can see it might be able to do what those android apps do. i mainly want something that can display engine info as i drive and possibly display/log a fault code if it arises...
