Is the process for bleeding AWD brakes the same as FWD? Or does the car need to be off the ground and running for the bleed to be done? I read that somewhere, can't remember where

Reason I ask is I will need to change my fluid soon and will be doing it myself. I'm able to take my time as I have a second car and mine rarely gets driven.

shouldnt be any different as bleeding a FWD. start from the furthest away < normally the rear left > then work your way to the closest one < normally the front right > I normally have some one to pump the pedal for me and make sure you have enough fluid to make sure it is flushed out enough and once they are done i always just go back through them all in the same order to double check

Thanks taniagirl, how much fluid did you use before you considered the fluid changed?

I kept it flowing through until you could see the new fluid clearly come through the hose fed into the bottle I have a feeling I used way to much fluid but from memory I used one and a half one litre bottles but normally I am sure you could use a lot less I am just a little OTT on things like these

Correct sequence for bleeding the brakes as per the service manual is passenger side rear, drivers side front, drivers side rear, passenger side front.
This due to the ABS sysyem, the front left and rear right are on the same circuit as are the front right and rear left.
Older, non ABS cars are done the same as Taniagirl mentioned.

So, having the car running must ensure that ABS and booster don't throw any codes then?

I'll also more than likely be doing this myself, hence why I'll be taking my time to get it right

I've just found the workshop file, it states having the car running, doesn't state why, but as mentioned above more for the ABS factor

Nope just did myn with the engine turned off but it does kind of help and make it alot quicker to have some one pumping the pedal just make sure they dont go right to the floor with the pedal in case there is some crap in the master cylinder

Having the car running will make it easier to depress the brake pedal otherwise it becomes very hard to press after a couple of presses.

Well, I bought some fluid, hoping to get it done this weekend.

I've done mine a few times now with a vacuum bleeder, AWD and 2WD. Engine off, and it all sucked through fine.

Thanks for all the advice guys, changed the fluid, and took for a test drive. Big change, stops way harder and faster, did a few 60-0 stops both sedately and stomped down just short of activating the ABS. Got home, checked the level again, all good.
Pretty much made sure when bleeding, the level never dropped past the min mark. Took me an about hour to do.
