Hey Guys,

Last Tuesday night, I was about to head out, and when I started my car the CEL was flashing and Idle was a bit rough. I switched it off and took the other car instead. About 3 hours later I did an under-bonnet inspection and started the car again. No CEL and everything seems fine again, even after a short test drive. The car has been fine ever since (touch wood).

I ordered a OBDII scanner from ebay and it arrived yesterday. Checked for codes, and I got the "U1120". I also did the Mode $06 tests and got the following data:

You need to look up what the "U1120" error describes.

"U1120 means the PCM doesn't receive a vehicle speed signal from the Anti-lock brake Module over the CAN C bus. This can be caused by the ABS module, PCM or something wrong with the can bus. This might be just an erroneous code and may never set again."

From your data:

Your engine is not experiencing any misfires on any cylinders.

Your oxygen sensors are fine.

Your catalytic converters are fine.

I'd ignore something like:

as you don't have a bank four! I think the reading gives you some data that isn't relevant to your car.
With CELs, I usually wait until the CEL condition is reliably repeatable a number of times, before I start to worry. Last one was a cam angle sensor that went silly once warmed up, fine when cold.

(Somebody flame me if I'm barking up the wrong tree please.)

U1120 is the error you get when the battery is on the way out.

Zilo - That is what I read elsewhere, but my battery is less than a year old, and should be in pretty good condition. I'll borrow a "Battery/Alternator Tester" (or just use my multimeter) and make sure. Thanks.

I'd be tempted to ignore the error, it may not come back. The CAN bus does a lot of work sending data to the ECU when firing up and spurious positives can happen.

Which ELM gadget do you have? I'd like to get one to play with on a 2011 Lancer! They are quite cheap on ebay I see. Reading it on a phone or tablet?

You are right, the crank angle sensor can lead to this error code. One way to find out - keep driving the car, if it was a false positive, the error won't come back. If the crank angle sensor is failing, this code and possibly others will appear.

Just FYI it's in the service manual for the US Galant, a lot of the 380 codes are not in the 380 service manual, and it appears that the 380 codes are a partial subset of the Galant set.
