I just filled up the car and noticed that there was no hissing noise when I unscrewed the fuel cap on my KJ2.
Additionally I have noticed every now and then and very faint fuel smell inside and around the car. I could not pinpoint where it was coming from as it wasn't strong enough. I did however remove the rear bench and there was no fuel smell from where the fuel sender is.

Hissing occurs when there is atmospheric difference between the tank and the outside air when you remove the cap. It usually is more prominent when your tank is running close to empty. There would not be any other vent for the fuel tank.
Check the fuel filter and connectors? Located under the car near the rear left wheel.

check the connections to the charcoal canister if there is a fuel smell.

Fuel tank cap. Common problem. The plastic ratcheting on the cap wears, and ratchets too early ... So the cap isn't screwed in far enough to push the big rubber o-ring against the filler neck.
Get a new cap. Genuine only $20, aftermarket are hit and miss.

Thanks guys, I was hoping it was something this simple but was worried there was some hidden hose that may have perished

I need a new fuel cap. A local Mitsu dealer wanted $40+ for the genuine part which I reluctantly agreed to though after a few months waiting it seems that there are none available anywhere. Is this true?
Any particular recommendations for fuel caps? There are a couple of brands I can see on ebay.
I have an occasional problem of fuel leaking past the cap on a hot day. It has damaged my paintwork over the last couple of years and must be stopped.

I bought mine through Johnvirus for $20 or less (can't remember the cost).
From what I understand, Hyundai or something use the exact same fuel cap too.
Send Johnvirus a message and maybe organize to get it off him during the next meet or something.
As a follow up to my issue, a new OEM fuel cap has brought back that hissing noise when unscrewing it.

That's bizarre.
Got mine 18 months ago, for $19.70 or something, service guy said there was a ton of the things on the shelf.
Don't go after market if you can avoid it.

The ratcheting device is simply 3 plastic fingers. If one breaks off, which they do with age, the cap won't seal. Same for the "O" ring, if cracked, no seal.
Easy to check visually.
I get mine from the wreckers. Usually found in the boot, or in some yards, in a box behind the counter.
If a newer cap doesn't fix the problem, look under the car at the rubber hoses that connect the fuel filler to the tank and check for loose clamps or cracking.

Thanks guys.
I've sent jv a pm so we'll see if he can help. Failing that a wreckers or ebay will be my next course of action.
