Anybody out there fitted an after market cruise control to their car?

The local dealer is offering one for ~$700 fitted. I've had a look at a couple of others but have no idea what's best.

Any one got any ideas, experience or comments?

That's what I meant to ask. What's the pros and cons between electric and vacuum?

Electric is smoother and not reliant on vacuum. I have found that the vacuum ones play up sometimes when coming down the other side of hills and when you get on level ground the speed may drop below the set speed before it realizes that it has and kicks in. It all comes down to cost as the electric one are dearer to purchase or replace if something goes wrong. I like the ford ones as the comput and cruz module are all in one etc.,

vacuum ones are crap... cheapo vacuum ones can have the seals dry out... and then they have trouble engaging. (and my old one used to hunt up and down with the throttle trying to maintain the speed u would get carsick).

Bit of a twist today boys (and Girls).

Got my VR-X leather wheel and low and behold it has the cruise control stalk on it. As I am getting cruise as well the brilliant idea of hooking the cruise module up to the original stalk seemed too good.

And so it seems it is.

Mitsubishi said you can't get the cruise control kit for the TH Magna because they had problems with it (either cruise module not talking to ECU or ECU not listening) and never released the kit, although they had planned to up to the point where it comes up on their computer screen but with no part number. They then proceeded to inform me that you cannot buy all the parts separately! (What do you do if it breaks? They didn't know!!!!!)

The auto electrian who fits the after market kits for the dealer said his kit wouldn't do it (forgot to ask what kit it is, sorry). I also spoke to the local Auscruise agent who looked blank when I told him what I was thinking but at least promised to check with Auscruise themselves and get back to me.

Surely this cannot be impossible, merely impracticle on cost grounds. The best advise I have had so far is to rip all the bits required off a Magna in the scrap yard or to remove the stalk from the wheel and proceed with my original plan of after market system complete with tacky stalk/wheel pad.

I know some of you are quite gifted when it comes to this sort of thing and tend to take more of an interest in Magnas than dealers who also shift Fords for a living. Do any of you think this can be done and if so HOW?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If I was in your position, I would look at sourcing the remaining components from a wrecker to complete the "factory" cruise setup - depending on cost.

I would at least entertain the idea by getting some quotes from different wreckers, and then compare those to the aftermarket options.

cruise is overrated, but if your really keen then you should have no problems getting the parts from a wreck, shouldnt cost too much, then again, isnt there somthing different about the throttle body?

I emailed Autron (who make Auscruise) and they said it would be no problem at all to hook their system up with the original stalk. They are speaking to the local installer to tell him what to do and then I get a quote. If it's less than $1000 I'm going to do it.

This is a good way of getting your after market cruise except that it costs a lot. I reckon the system is $700 with extra for the interface. The other big cost is the wheel and cruise stalk but I bought that for a different reason so it doesn't count. All up I think ~$1200 wil be the final bill!

I just got an aftermarket cruise put in - the kit cost $220, which didn't have the stalk control thank god, just a small dash mounted 3 button job. I took it to my local auto electrician, and it cost me $180 to get both the cruise and a powerchip put in - so less than $400 fitted is not too bad

on the stalk bit...
te cruise only uses 2 wires.. it sends some electronic pulse down them that gets interperated at the other end... so I reckon it would be imposible to get an aftermarket one to work with a factory stalk.
