View Full Version : Led Indicator Lights for 380 DB Series 3
Guys and Gals,
I have previously fitted LED brake / side and indicator lights to my 2003 ES magna, had no problems, work well and I am pleased with results.
Wanted to fit LED indicator lights to my newer 2008 380 after having fitted stop / tail lights (including load resister) and side indicator lights.
On previous 2003 magna above, I bought and replaced indicator flash relay with electronic unit.
I can hear the flasher unit working under dash of 380, but have not been able to find if there is an external or replaceable flasher relay.
Does any one know if the flasher relay has been cunningly hidden by the bas....ds in the fuse module please??
If flasher relay is not accesable, then I suppose that I can fit a load resistor each side, but that kind of defeats half the benefit of low power draw of LED's on indicators?
Any suggestions greatfully received,
Thanks:hmm:

Have tried led indicators and they just wont work ,even when using load resistors....for the light output that the led put out ,i have never found them to be worth it.
Watch out for those led in the stop/tale as it reeks havoc with your cruise.
Thanx for reply, but I have had no probs with cruise control, just install 50W 6 ohm resistor across brake light wiring and this provides drain path for cruise control relay hold in current.
Previously this current went down to ground through Brake light filament.
Bought LED's ( cree type) and shunt resistor from BI LED optronics on eBay.
Excellent light output.
Did the same on my older 2003 ES Magna - works well.

I seem to recall the "flasher unit" is integral in the ECU

I tried also and gave up due cruise problem and dash lights coming on when brake operated due feed back from LED's
Did you have this problem with load resistor installed?
Thanks Terry,
Managed to d/ load 380 maintenance manual and had a quick browse through electrical circuits.
Saw that flasher units were part of ecu and fuse block assy, but the audible clicking / ticking sound is probably generated mechanically behind fuse as I can actually feel a vibration there if I stick my paw inside at back of fuse.
Not game to try and separate the ECU unit from fuse assy, for fear that the cunning bas....ds have hidden some trap inside for amateurs (like moi)
I see that SCA have a Narva 50W 8 ohm resistor ($12.75) which they claim is the normal current draw for 21W filament globe, which they claim will fix? your blinkers not operating when you install LED's
Plan to purchase LED's anyway for indicators, and will start by:
1. Just use orange LED globe each side in rear of car, while leaving clear incandescent globe in front indicator. See if blinkers still work.
2. Install white LED in front indicator and temp wire a 10W 37 ohm wire wound resistor across LED on one side to simulate current draw through flasher circuit, and see if this will coax the audible clicking function to work.
3. Can play around with resistor selection till I get the minimum current draw required for it to work.
On my 2003 TL magna, I used 2 x 22W 10W wire resistors in series on one brake lamp circuit as drain path for cruise control relay hold in current (say 0.25Amps) . Only gets mildly warn to touch, and hence does not put a heap of heat into boot on a trip.
On my 380, with 50W 6 ohm resistor across brake LED, it gets quite hot in a short time ( 2 amp current draw) so I will add extra 8 ohm resistor from SCA in series to give 0.8 amp current draw.
Another respondent said that she? did not have much joy fitting LED's, but that may be a function of what type of LED you fit.
LED replacement globe has to mimic light output from original filament, especially if the reflector at globe is parabolic, as this reflector directs light rays through lens magnification mouldings. (gives all those pretty concentrated dots etc around outside of tail light assy)
If u just install high intensity narrow beam LED, then light just goes out through a few lens mouldings in the centre of tail light or blinker, and hence gives a very poor result.
Do I see that u have a 380 with LPG fitted, factory or after market??
Planning to do the same in a few weeks time on my 380.

I believe mine is after market as car was originally delivered to a rental company, but was already on LPG when I bought it in 2010 at about 45K km

Has anyone tried diodes in series with the stop & tail lights to prevent voltage feedback to ECU and dash etc? Does this fix cruise dropping out when lights are on or dash lights coming on when brake is used?

Anything that slows down the operation of the LED's defeats the purpose imo.
Will the drain path result in a .01-.02 second delay i wonder in startup of the LED?
As for brightness, i think the standard bulbs are fine.
